About The Position

The Aquatic Director is responsible to ensure all participants are provided with activities which promote the social, cultural, educational, physical, and leadership potential of each person.  Under the Aquatic Director’s supervision all aquatic facilities will be kept safe and clean, staffed by certified employees who reflect and support the Mission of Old Colony Y. In Brockton, this position will help populate the Aquatics employee pipeline for all of Old Colony YMCA through prioritizing training, in-servicing, and continuous improvement. He/she will uphold the employee code of conduct and will ensure that all areas of the job responsibilities reflect the mission of the Old Colony Y, and regulating agency.  The Aquatic Director will display and encourage the character traits of caring, responsibility, honesty and respect in the fulfillment of all job duties.

Requirements

  • Must acquire and maintain certification with the following and within required timelines: Ellis LG & LGI, American Red Cross WSI or WSIT, Vangaard Aquatics Supervisor Training
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of related work experience, supervisory experience preferred
  • Must be physically able to teach aquatic lessons and lift an adult male from the pool to the pool deck
  • Complete program specific and employee orientation training by required timeline.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain a lifeguard training and onboarding program to ensure a consistent flow of qualified lifeguards to Old Colony YMCA programs. This program will be inclusive of all people able to meet the required safety standards.
  • Ensure that Old Colony Y Swim Testing/Test. Mark. Protect. Standards are upheld at all operating hours.
  • Lead a staff of certified, diligent and professional lifeguards who display optimal guarding during our facilities regular “5-minute quick check” observations
  • Ensure regularly scheduled lifeguard in-services are performed in a manner that allows staff to feel confident and rescue ready in their abilities to prevent and react to aquatic emergencies. In addition, use in-services to train and communicate clear expectations to future lifeguards.
  • Recognize the importance of the branch aquatics facilities in creating value for membership and program/schedule to allow for engaging regular usage of the pool by both members and program participants
  • Serve as a contributing member of the Old Colony Y Aquatics Team. In your role, you will be asked to lead the scheduling and quality control of Association lifeguard trainings.
  • Use Old Colony Y marketing materials to engage the community around water safety, Aquatics fun, and swim lesson/program opportunities at the Y and at Cosgrove Pool.
  • Ensure supervision of pool area, locker rooms and swimmers at all times the aquatics facility is open
  • Submit all in-service records, swim testing, incident reporting, Emergency action plan documentation and Ellis administrative materials to the Aquatics teams drive completed and on time.
  • Ensure communication with supervisor and the greater branch team around all aquatic happenings
  • Conduct high-quality swim lessons and water safety programming through certified professional staff that meets or exceeds allocated budget
  • Provide clear and engaging communication to swim lesson participants regarding student progress, class expectations and dates, etc.
  • Keep all coastguard approved lifejackets/PFD’s, Safety Equipment, Water Fitness equipment, Water/Family toys, and Swim Lesson aids in adequate condition and quantity for member use
  • Coordinate and facilitate pool usage with all program departments.
  • Teach swim classes as needed as well as Lifeguard as needed.
  • Work with community partners, such as Special Olympics of Massachusetts, to provide additional program opportunities for members that compliment our offerings and are in line with our priorities.
  • Oversee the branch emergency action plan and ensure supplemental responders are trained and rescue ready at all hours the facility is open.
  • Recruit, hire, train, mentor and evaluate aquatic staff to ensure professional progression and attainment of higher level certifications whenever possible.
  • Recruit, train and provide leadership for volunteers and interns of all abilities.
  • While guarding, serve as a role model to staff, ensuring all items in the lifeguard job description are met
  • Assign and post staff schedules ensuring adequate coverage of the pool at all times of operation.
  • Ensure that all certifications and in-service training requirements are up to date for all staff and documentation is properly filed.
  • Adhere to all fiscal policies and procedures such as program registration, purchase orders, company credit card and employee expenses.
  • Keep accurate attendance records and class rosters
  • Participate in the Annual Campaign by running at least one fundraising event in the aquatic department.
  • Develop annual budget as it pertains to aquatics.
  • Manage the aquatic portion of the program budget to meet or exceed the budgeted numbers.
  • Promote, recruit and maintain memberships.
  • Ensure all equipment playing a role in the branch emergency action plan and general first aid are well-stocked, checked regularly/as required and note any areas of improvement to discuss with the greater branch team
  • Work with (or individually possess) the branch CPO to ensure clean, safe and well organized pump room, chemical storage, and water quality/pool maintenance
  • Properly open and close pool as scheduled following the Association opening and closing checklists
  • Ensure security and safety of pool area, never leaving area unattended or unlocked, check all doors and windows.
  • Ensure cleanliness of pool areas daily, hosing deck, brushing down walls, cleaning staff office, putting equipment away in storage closet neatly, inspecting pool area and reporting all problems in writing to supervisor. Assign various jobs to staff and post.
  • Serve as a Manager on Duty in collaboration with other branch leadership to ensure optimal branch management at all times of operation.
  • Work in partnership with the Program Director- Workforce Development to ensure alignment in strategy for workforce pipeline development
  • Serve as an active member of the Association Aquatics Leadership team
  • Participate in gaining support for the branch and Association annual campaign
  • Promote Y programs through public appearances, presentations and community collaboration
