About The Position

The YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region is searching for Shift Supervisors to ensure the safety of visitors to our aquatic facilities. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Shift Supervisor is responsible for supervising lifeguards during mornings, nights, weekends, and times when the Aquatics Director is not available. The Shift Supervisor will tactfully handle member complaints and concerns. In addition, they are required to guard occasionally and display a positive role model and mentor for other aquatics staff—all while maintaining a safe and organized pool area. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Employees may perform other related business duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the YMCA. Requirements

  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Current YMCA lifeguard experience and a combination of supervisory and/or leadership opportunities.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguard Certification (required).
  • YMCA Lifeguard Instructor Certification (must be obtained within 9 months of hire or first available class).
  • Proficiency in swimming and safety skills.
  • Must be observant, safety-conscious, and able to react calmly and quickly in emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise all aquatic programs and staff in absence of Aquatic Director or Pool Manager.
  • Assist Aquatic Director or Pool Manager, if needed, with scheduling or other duties, assigning lifeguard shifts, and supporting swim lessons and special events.
  • Perform lifeguarding shifts as necessary, including leading or participating in random or scheduled lifeguard drills and audits.
  • Complete pool chemical inspections and report any issues or abnormalities to the Aquatics Director or Building Manager.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of emergency and evacuation plans, SOPs, and safety procedures.
  • Address member concerns effectively and professionally.
  • Complete paperwork, incident reports, time sheets, injury reports, and equipment inventories.
  • Use sound judgment and problem-solving skills to support aquatic operations.
  • Ensure lifeguards are in proper uniform, at their assigned posts, and that rotations and breaks are managed effectively.
  • Provide guidance and support to lifeguards, assisting with job performance and staff development.
  • Assign lifeguards to pool upkeep tasks (cleaning restrooms, restocking supplies, vacuuming, etc.).
  • Ensure lifeguards refrain from secondary duties (such as chemical handling or equipment storage) while actively guarding.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
