About The Position

Required to successfully complete the US Department of Labor curriculum consisting of 576+ academic hours and 6000 hours of on–the-job learning (OJL). Must maintain an academic average with a minimum score of 70% and maintain a minimum performance assessment of ‘meets standards’. Must perform corresponding job duties and responsibilities to the applicable trade positions over the course of the four-year apprenticeship Trades Assistant B Class A Class Assists or works with other trades or Austal USA employees as directed (May be assigned tasks outside craft as required) Commit to learning all aspects of the assigned trade, which may include but are not limited to: Reading and interpreting drawings, blueprints, and specifications. Measuring using both metric and English systems. Layout, fabrication, installation, and testing of components or systems. Use of hand tools, power tools, and trade-specific machinery. Electrical systems, piping systems, structural fabrication, welding, HVAC, insulation, interior/exterior fitout and related marine applications as applicable to trade. Practice safe working habits when using power tools, machinery, and working in production environments. Miscellaneous tasks as directed by supervisor or instructor

Requirements

  • Possess the academic ability to succeed in the program
  • Demonstrate the motivation to continuously improve their knowledge/skills
  • Have the integrity to complete all assigned academic work independently
  • Demonstrate a high degree of reliability, both in task accomplishment and time keeping
  • Ability to measure using Metric and English system
  • Must have successfully completed a related technical training program or have the equivalent craft work experience
  • Must be able and willing to learn and retain information on company and trade procedures, materials, applicable tool usage, safety items, and equipment for the applicable trade of interest.
  • 16 years of age or older at time of application
  • Able to provide proof of US Person Status
  • No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date
  • No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years from disposition date
  • Willing to submit to a drug screen
  • Willing to submit to a background check

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of shipyard terminology such as general ship structure and vessel layout preferred.
  • Graduates from Austal specific training programs are preferred
