About The Position

The Tom Kelley Volvo Apprentice Service Technician role is designed for individuals to develop skills in vehicle maintenance and repair. During the first year of employment, the company provides $800 worth of tools, which become the technician's property after the first year, along with a $50 tool stipend per pay period. The position involves performing basic maintenance functions under the guidance of a Trainer and/or Service Manager, aiming to execute accurate repairs and contribute to the service department's profitability. Key responsibilities include managing repair orders, performing efficient and accurate repairs according to dealership and factory standards, diagnosing malfunctions, coordinating with the parts department, and ensuring vehicle cleanliness. The technician is also accountable for maintaining dealership tools and adhering to regulations for hazardous material disposal. Continuous professional development is a core aspect, requiring attendance at factory-sponsored and safety training classes, achieving at least one ASE Certification, staying updated on technical bulletins, and fostering strong working relationships within the service department and with other departments to resolve customer complaints.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or the equivalent.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions and information.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Sales and supervisory experience preferred.
  • Some experience and vocational training preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic maintenance functions while working closely with a Trainer and/or Manager to develop skills, execute accurate repairs and contribute to service department profitability.
  • Receive repair orders and take vehicle to and from assigned work areas.
  • Responsible for making correct repairs the first time.
  • Perform work as outlined on the repair order with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Perform work in accordance with dealership and factory standards.
  • Diagnose cause of any malfunction and perform repair.
  • Communicate with parts department to obtain needed parts.
  • Save and tag parts if the job is under warranty or if requested by customer.
  • Examine vehicle to determine if additional safety or service work is needed.
  • Advise trainer if additional work is needed or if repairs cannot be completed within the time promised.
  • Road-test vehicles, keeping in mind that customer’s vehicle should always be treated with the utmost care and respect.
  • Maintain cleanliness of customer’s car.
  • Keep shop area neat and clean.
  • Responsible for all dealership tools and their maintenance.
  • Understand and follow federal, state and local regulations as to the disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Attend factory sponsored training classes as directed.
  • Attend safety related training classes as directed.
  • Acquire at least one (1) ASE Certification.
  • Keep abreast of all factory technical bulletins.
  • Collaborate with trainer to develop targeted skills.
  • Establish and maintain a good working relationship within service department and with other departments to reduce conflict and maintain dealer profitability.
  • Assist service advisors or others to resolve customer complaints.
  • Perform any other tasks deemed necessary per Management.
