About The Position

The Mechanic Apprentice supports the Heavy-Duty Repairman/Mechanic team in maintaining, servicing, and repairing heavy equipment used in construction, demolition, agriculture, transportation, and related industries. This role is designed for individuals developing their mechanical skillset through hands-on training, mentorship, and practical field experience. The apprentice will assist with inspections, routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs while learning safe and effective practices for working on heavy machinery.

Requirements

  • Willing to become a member of Local 3.
  • Interest in developing a career as a heavy equipment mechanic.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to learn to diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with basic hand tools and power tools; willingness to learn use of welding equipment and diagnostic instruments.
  • Ability to read or willingness to learn to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagrams.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate documentation.
  • Physical ability to work in various weather conditions, tight spaces, and at heights.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to safety, reliability, and continuous learning.

Responsibilities

  • Equipment Diagnosis & Support Assist in diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues on equipment such as excavators, loaders, bobcats, utility trailers, and dump trucks.
  • Support mechanics in troubleshooting using diagnostic tools and software.
  • Maintenance & Inspection Perform routine maintenance tasks under supervision, including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacements, and fluid checks.
  • Help conduct detailed inspections of heavy equipment to identify worn components, leaks, or safety issues.
  • Repairs & Component Work Assist with repairing or replacing parts such as engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulic components, and electrical systems.
  • Learn and use proper techniques with hand tools, power tools, and specialized service equipment.
  • Fabrication & Welding (Training Provided) Support welding and basic fabrication tasks as assigned.
  • Learn proper welding and metalwork safety practices.
  • Documentation & Communication Maintain accurate records of work performed, including parts used, hours, and services completed.
  • Communicate effectively with mechanics and dispatch to support scheduling and workflow.
  • Safety & Professional Practices Follow all safety standards, PPE requirements, and company procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, tools, and service truck.
  • Participate in training programs, coursework, and self-study to advance mechanical knowledge and apprenticeship progress.
