About The Position

Participates in a structured training program, as part of the LUMA's Apprenticeship Program, designed to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to become a Journeyman Lineworker. Under close supervision, the apprentice will assist in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical power systems, while progressively taking on more responsibility and demonstrating the ability to work independently upon completion of the program.

Requirements

  • High School or equivalent (GED).
  • Successful completion of each preceding apprenticeship level and all required company and provincial assessments are mandatory to advance to the next stage and progress through the program, ensuring that candidates have acquired the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience to perform safely and effectively at increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Requires the completion of a minimum of 1,000 on-the-job training hours and six months as an Apprentice Lineworker, 3rd Period, along with approval from Apprenticeship Program Management; Alternatively, candidates may qualify through completion of an equivalent to LUMA’s Apprentice Lineworker, 3rd Period level from another registered apprenticeship program, provided they also have demonstrated linework experience in primary distribution systems.
  • Completion of all required company and provincial assessments is mandatory to remain in and progress through the apprenticeship program.
  • 3 years of experience with similar responsibilities working in Utility Industry.
  • Must be available to work overtime, weekends, holidays, rotating shifts and outside of regular shift hours as needed, including during emergency response situations, to support system reliability and restoration efforts.
  • This position is with IBEW Union 222. If you accept an offer of employment, you will be required to affiliate with the Union.
  • Pass the Apprentice Power Lineworker Entrance Exam
  • Pass Climbing School
  • Valid Puerto Rico driver’s license Category 9 is required. However, a valid Puerto Rico license in any other category will be accepted with the commitment to obtain the required license within a period of no more than 90 days of employment to be in compliance.
  • Permit to Operate Commercial Vehicle from The Transport and Other Public Services Bureau (NTSP, "Negociado de Transporte y Otros Servicios Públicos de Puerto Rico". If you do not have a heavy-duty category license to obtain the required permit, you must commit to obtain one within 90 days of employment to be in compliance.
  • Driver's Record (DTOP)
  • Candidates must meet all applicable federal requirements under DOT regulation, including pre-employment drug test and medical certification.

  • Automated External Defibrillator certification (AED)

Responsibilities

  • Maintains accurate records and reports of work performed and on-the-job training hours completed, supporting compliance and program tracking.
  • Learns and applies safety procedures through hands-on training and classroom instruction, reducing risk and promoting a safe work environment.
  • Performs assigned tasks under supervision of qualified personnel, such as assisting with equipment setup, material handling, and basic field operations including assisting with the installation and maintenance of electrical lines, to build foundational skills, gain hands-on experience, and contribute to team productivity.
  • Climbs poles and works at heights to gain proficiency in overhead linework, preparing for independent journeyman-level responsibilities.
  • Operates tools and equipment under supervision after receiving proper training, to perform basic linework tasks that support daily operations and contribute to project progress and skill development.
  • Participates in team discussions and follows instructions to contribute to a respectful work environment and develop communication skills for future roles.
  • Follows safety instructions and participates in briefings to learn hazard awareness and support a safe work environment.
  • Follows established company policies, procedures, and standards to ensure full compliance with applicable laws and industry regulations.
  • Assist the crew during emergency response efforts by following instructions and performing basic tasks during storm restoration and outage repairs, gaining hands-on experience under adverse conditions while supporting community power reliability.
  • Performs additional tasks aligned with role expectations and qualifications to support team goals and operational flexibility.
