About The Position

We are seeking a full-time Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join our dynamic, collaborative Emergency Department Observation Unit team. This role involves managing acute and chronic conditions for adolescent (age 15 and older), adult, and geriatric patients with anticipated short hospital stays. Responsibilities include comprehensive patient assessment, treatment planning, and coordination of care in a fast-paced, team-based environment. Shifts include a mix of day, evening, and night coverage, with shared weekends and holidays. The Advance Practice Provider (Specialty) has advanced knowledge and skills to qualify her/him to function as a primary health care provider. She/he serves as a member of a collaborative health care team. This collaborative role includes responsibility for determining the patient’s health and medical status by taking a health history; performing physical exams; initiating screening and diagnostic procedures; providing health maintenance services; and management of pregnancy, minor trauma, acute illnesses, and stable chronic illness. The APP consults with a physician, as appropriate, keeping the physician informed of needs and problems related to patient care. The Advanced Practice Provider demonstrates knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and assesses data reflective of the patient’s status. The Advanced Practice Provider interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age specific needs and provides care according to departmental policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing and Nurse Practitioner Program or Accredited Physician Assistant Program
  • License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant) as set forth by the state of Virginia
  • If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required
  • Eligible for prescriptive authority in accordance with State regulations and as authorized by the Virginia Boards of Nursing and Medicine
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required
  • Current PALS/NPR, as required, specific to position
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position
  • Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of Carilion Clinic, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies
  • Capable of meeting credentialing or job function requirements as needed based on the requirements of the practice and of managed care payors and insurers
  • Qualifies for malpractice insurance and is accepted by Carilion Clinic’s malpractice insurance carrier
  • Able to work collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers
  • Demonstrates good written and oral communication skills
  • Computer literacy required for automated computer systems, including electronic medical records

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in observation medicine, inpatient hospital medicine, or emergency care is preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience preferred
