About The Position

The Mentoring Coach for Special Education plays a pivotal role in supporting and enhancing the instructional practices and classroom management of first-year special education teachers. This position involves providing professional development and job-embedded coaching support to ensure special education teachers successfully transition into their roles. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Demonstrated successful teaching experience for at least five (5) years
  • Holds or is eligible for a Virginia Collegiate Professional License with an endorsement in one or more areas of special education
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate best practices for instruction to support teachers
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and leadership skills for working effectively with colleagues, administrators, and students
  • Demonstrated commitment to personal growth and learning
  • Proven ability to work cooperatively and effectively with colleagues
  • Demonstrated skills in analyzing and using data for instructional decision-making
  • Demonstrated how to facilitate reflective conversations with teachers
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time.
  • Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • The employee is regularly talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • The employee must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Provides one-on-one coaching support for special education teachers through classroom visits, feedback, modeling, reflection, and problem-solving.
  • Communicates and collaborates confidentially with teachers and administrators.
  • Assists the Mentoring and Coaching Supervisor by monitoring and assessing the effectiveness of the mentoring and coaching program.
  • Facilitates reflective conversations with special education teachers to drive instructional practices.
  • Maintains records of coaching visits.
  • Assists in gathering and distributing information and data to enhance instruction to students.
  • Collects data to inform relevant professional development for novice-level special education teachers.
  • Provides professional development to enhance teachers' professional learning and effectiveness.
