About The Position

This job is located in the Animal Welfare Division of the Development Services Department within the City of Oklahoma City and is under the direction of an immediate supervisor. The Animal Welfare Supervisor – Shelter Operations oversees the daily Animal Shelter operations and coordinates the staff responsible for animal care and customer service.

Requirements

  • Possession of a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in an animal shelter or animal care environment, including performing direct animal care, facilitating adoptions and reclaims, and participating in euthanasia procedures.
  • Knowledge of animal husbandry, shelter operations, and standards of care.
  • Knowledge of sanitation, disease prevention, and shelter outbreak protocols.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to animal care and control.
  • Skill in animal behavior an dability to aid with care and handling.
  • Skill in maintaining records and preparing reports.
  • Skill in communicating using tact and diplomacy.
  • Skill in managing inventory, supplies, and equipment.
  • Skill in utilizing kennel management systems and Microsoft Office software packages.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and coordinate the work of assigned staff.
  • Ability to evaluate operational practices and recommend improvements.
  • Ability to assist in planning and organizing unit operations, including facilities, vehicles, budgets, and programs.
  • Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and safe shelter environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability and willingness to assume responsibility for operations of the work unit.
  • Ability to travel.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing adoptions, lost and found services, clinic activities, cleaning, animal care, and customer inquiries.
  • Supervising and supporting staff through training, coaching, and technical guidance.
  • Demonstrating proper equipment use and safe animal handling techniques.
  • Ensuring compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, as well as departmental policies and safety procedures.
  • Maintaining regular, professional communication with residents, City employees, law enforcement, and external agencies to share information, resolve issues, and provide assistance.
  • Conducting cash audits and monitoring operational requirements.
  • Leading special projects such as deep cleaning, outbreak protocols, de-cluttering efforts, and inventory management.
  • Managing shelter supplies, inventory, purchases, and contracts as needed.
  • Overseeing the maintenance and repair of shelter facilities, vehicles, equipment, and materials as needed.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
