Job Summary We are seeking an Animal Support Technician II to join our Insourcing Solutions team, supporting the Boston and Cambridge, MA area. As the Animal Support Technician II, you will maintain and monitor the health, production and physical environment within the IS commercial and academic client animal facility. Perform animal care and husbandry, to include daily equipment checks; providing appropriate food and water; performing cage changing and/or cage cleaning; recording animal health concerns, cage wash duties and sanitation. Provide environmental enrichment appropriate to species and support to multiple client's lab animal facilities. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and two years related animal handling, husbandry, and/or technical experience in lab animal research facility.
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) in biology or animal science or related field and one year experience in animal handling, husbandry, and/or technical experience in lab animal research facility.

Nice To Haves

  • AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level (LAT) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate records of animal breeding, health, and housing/isolator or support areas.
  • Assist with restraint, handling and manipulation of various animal species as assigned by the on-site supervisor or facility/attending veterinarian.
  • Perform humane chemical and physical euthanasia in accordance with the Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the AVMA Guide on Euthanasia, and under the direction of the attending veterinarian, or designee.
  • Follow all procedures necessary to properly maintain animal housing areas, including room or facility personnel entry; personnel protective equipment use, and sanitation/decontamination of equipment and materials.
  • Receive, inspect and house incoming animals.
  • Operate equipment and use supplies according to safety guidelines; perform general housekeeping and adhere to safety procedures.
  • Sanitize, maintain, and repair caging materials as directed. Maintain cage wash facilities in a clean and organized manner.
  • Prepare and submit required written records, charts, logs, and inventories.
  • May perform post-surgical observations and associated record keeping.
  • May perform basic technical skills such as fasting, body weights, and food/water measurements.
  • May perform animal identification (ear notching, tattooing, microchip).
  • May set up breeding pairs, perform plug checks, conduct weaning and collecting samples for genotyping; maintain colony records.
  • Train to perform rodent dosing such as PO, IP, SQ and topical.
