About The Position

The Animal Services Technician Lead oversees intake processes for incoming animals, managing physical identification, health assessments, and behavioral evaluations. Supervises placement and housing arrangements, while guiding staff in feeding, cleaning, and handling protocols. Ensures optimal animal care by implementing sanitation, grooming, nutrition, and medication plans tailored to individual needs. Responsibilities include: physical identifications of animals, assessing health and behavioral issues, establishing sanitation practices, developing nutrition plans, administering medication as required, provide training on handling techniques, ensuring adherence to animal welfare standards, and performs euthanasia as necessary. The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Requirements

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED; two (2) years of experience in animal handling and veterinary practices, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must hold or obtain a Euthanasia Certification within one year of hire or enrollment in a veterinary assistant or veterinary technician certification program if not already certified.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment. Employment is contingent upon clearing both the drug screening and background investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee sanitation protocols for dog kennels and cat rooms to maintain cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Supervise Kennel Staff to ensure smooth operations and adherence to protocols.
  • Perform intake and outcome procedures, including euthanasia, following established protocols.
  • Conduct daily assessments of animal health and behavior to detect any changes or issues promptly.
  • Administer medications, treatments, and supportive care to animals as prescribed.
  • Evaluate animals for spay/neuter procedures and transportation as needed.
  • Develop and implement protocols for cleaning and handling contagious animals to prevent disease transmission.
  • Properly restrain animals for medical procedures to ensure safety for both animals and staff.
  • Utilize a microscope for reading fecal samples, bloodwork, ear cytology, and skin scrapes accurately.
  • Assist veterinarians in performing x-rays and ultrasounds as required.
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness in the medical room and other medical areas to ensure a sterile environment.
  • Establish and manage departmental filing system to ensure efficient organization of records.
