About The Position

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is seeking a Breakthrough Maker for the role of Animal Research Quality Assurance Specialist. This position's primary responsibilities include managing the rodent health surveillance program, overseeing the importation and exportation of research animals, and performing routine quality assurance assessments of vivaria and associated equipment. The specialist will also be intimately involved with the controlled substance program, including related recordkeeping and training. Additionally, this role will assist with investigator animal use training and provide other research support as needed. Requirements

  • Associate's Degree
  • At least one (1) year of laboratory animal facility experience
  • Advanced knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements related to animals care/use in research
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills

  • At least three (3) years of quality assurance experience
  • At least three (3) years of experience in an AAALAC-accredited laboratory animal facility
  • Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) - American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification

Responsibilities

  • Assist with management of the rodent health surveillance and quarantine programs
  • Conduct necropsies and collect biological samples for diagnostics to include parasitology, bacteriology, serology, and histopathology
  • Perform quality assurance of equipment and sanitation procedures
  • Perform routine quality assurance inspections of the vivaria and associated equipment
  • Develop and update departmental standard operating procedures and policies
  • Assist with management of the centralized controlled substances program
  • Coordinate animal importation from commercial and non-commercial sources
  • Coordinate animal exportation ensuring compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations
  • Advise investigators and program staff regarding procedural issues
  • Provide oversight of the rodent quarantine and necropsy suites
  • Train investigator staff on controlled substance policies and procedures
  • Develop, maintain, and update training materials related to controlled substance use in animal research
  • Maintain detailed animal health and diagnostic test records
  • Maintain records in accordance with relevant agency guidelines to include the state of Pennsylvania, Public Health Service, the USDA, and AAALAC
  • Order and manage relevant supply inventory
  • Track and submit charges for billing purposes
  • Develop and update relevant content for the DVR intranet website
  • Other duties as assigned
