Animal Husbandry Internship
About The Position
Summer 2026 paid internships are available at Caldwell Zoo in Tyler, Texas in the areas of Animal Husbandry. (Available departments: Mammals 1, Mammals 2, Birds, and Reptiles) The Caldwell Zoo is seeking highly motivated, hard-working, professional minded students who want to take advantage of educational opportunities to gain on-the-job experience in the zoological career field. Internship learning opportunities and duties include: Safe methods of exotic animal handling and restraint Animal behavior, husbandry, and record keeping Animal nutrition, to include preparing and distributing animal diets Preventative medicine and disease treatment Water quality testing and water changes Cleaning animal enclosures Visitor relations Emergency procedures and protocols Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs and be able to work in all inclement weather conditions Watch animal medical procedures Attend a Veterinary Department meeting Assist keepers with daily projects Shadow up to five other departments
Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must be a sophomore in college or have a higher classification
- Overall GPA must be 2.5 or higher
- Must pass a background check and have a negative TB Test
- Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs and be able to work in all inclement weather conditions
