About The Position

To enforce City animal control laws, ordinances and regulations; to ensure the proper care of animals confined in the shelter; and to assist the public in reclaiming lost animals and in adoption procedures.

  • Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work.
  • Euthanasia techniques and procedures.
  • Operations, services and activities of the City.
  • Enforce animal regulations.
  • Interpret and apply laws and regulations of the City related to animal control.
  • Perform a variety of animal control activities.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Maintain an efficient record keeping system.
  • Utilize proper handling and impounding techniques.
  • Operate a variety of animal control equipment.
  • Analyze situations and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Participate in public presentations as assigned.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Identify and respond to community and City Commission issues, concerns and needs.
  • Act quickly and calmly in emergencies.
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations of the Police Department.
  • Interpret, explain, and enforce departmental polices and procedures.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time lifting and/or carrying objects over 45 pounds traveling to various work locations climbing ladders bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling or standing for extended periods of time. operating assigned equipment
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: making observations communicating with others reading and writing operating assigned equipment and vehicles answering questions speaking in a clear and audible voice traveling to various work location. effectively working with numbers.
  • Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of: making sound decisions and using sound judgment communicating clearly responding to questions evaluating various options and alternatives and choosing an appropriate and reasonable course of action
  • Effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve:: working with the public working closely with animals exposure to dirt and dust dangerous animals working under harsh weather conditions high level of noise potentially dangerous equipment and machinery
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid State of Kansas Drivers License

Responsibilities

  • Search for stray animals, livestock and wildlife; pick up dead, injured or dangerous animals; deliver and set live animal traps.
  • Report and assist in investigation of crimes of animal abuse or endangerment; gather and preserve evidence; interview victims, complainants and witnesses; present evidence and testify in court.
  • Enforce City animal control laws, ordinances and regulations; issue warnings or citations as required; appear in court to testify regarding animal control cases.
  • Respond to general public service calls and complaints concerning animal problems or violations of animal control ordinances; take appropriate action; including animals running at large, property damages, abuse or bites.
  • Coordinate a public relations program in order to foster public awareness of ordinances regarding animal control and humane treatment of animals.
  • Maintain and care for the City animal shelter; feed and house animals at the shelter; clean animal cages; perform adoption procedures for animals; euthanize injured or unwanted animals.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports; prepare written reports and records of daily activities; maintain records and filed of the animal shelter and the animals housed; log all incidents concerning animal control.
  • Maintain equipment in proper working condition; clean equipment as necessary.
  • Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential ordinance enforcement problems and preserve good relationships with the general public; take an active role in areas of public education relative to population control of animals, treatment of animals.
  • Make public presentations as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as required.
