The purpose of this classification is to enforce rabies control, educate the public about county ordinances and protect the people of DeKalb County from animals & the animals of DeKalb County from people. Essential Functions: The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Enforces the provisions of federal, state, and local codes and ordinances applicable to animal activities; completes pending/follow up calls that are distributed during the morning roll-call meetings, and takes work territory and call assignments; and reviews previous cases with Officers. Completes and/or processes a variety of forms, logs, reports, and other required documents; and reviews daily activity reports (DAR) to check case progress and possible follow-ups. Investigates complaints and reports of bites, cruelty, abuse, stray/nuisance, wildlife, livestock, exotic pets, and neglect or abandonment of animals by citizens and other providers of animal care; obtains evidentiary information to appear in court to testify as witness; and conducts interviews with complainant and possible suspect. Utilizes and maintains various equipment and tools associated with animal control activities; conducts daily inspections to check equipment. Patrols the county for stray, injured, and/or sick animals. Assists veterinary staff with examinations of animals brought into the shelter. Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws and regulations and attends in-service training.
