About The Position

We’re looking for an Analytics Engineer II to join Khan Academy’s Analytics Engineering (AE) team. You’ll help transform raw product, learning, and operational data into clean, reliable, and well-modeled datasets that power insights across the organization. You’ll collaborate closely with Data Infrastructure (DI), Data Analysts, and Product/Program teams to ensure that our data warehouse (BigQuery) and BI layer (Looker) serve as trusted sources for decision-making. This role is ideal for someone who’s comfortable working across both dbt and Looker, has an eye for data model design, and enjoys making complex data systems intuitive and performant.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of deep, warehouse-centric analytics engineering experience..
  • Strong SQL and dbt proficiency (including macros, Jinja, and incremental model strategies).
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining Looker models (LookML, Explores, derived tables).
  • Familiarity with modern data stacks (e.g., BigQuery, Git, and basic CI/CD practices for testing and deploying data models).
  • Understanding of data modeling concepts (SCDs, star schemas, bridge tables).
  • Strong communication skills and comfort collaborating across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Exposure to orchestration tools like Airflow.
  • Familiarity with version control and collaborative development (Git, code review).

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain dbt models that transform raw event- and entity-level data into curated, analytics-ready datasets.
  • Develop, document, and test semantic and reporting layers in Looker (LookML).
  • Partner with Analysts and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure consistent metric definitions and accurate data pipelines.
  • Contribute to data modeling best practices, including naming conventions, incremental strategies, and schema evolution.
  • Implement data quality tests and validation checks to ensure reliability of production datasets.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot data issues, coordinating fixes with Data Infrastructure and Engineering.
