American Express’s Global Financial Crimes Surveillance Unit (GFCSU) and the US Investigations Unit (USIU) are part of the broader Global Risk & Compliance organization, operating within Global Financial Crimes Compliance (GFCC). Together, they provide end-to-end oversight and support of global financial crimes investigations. In partnership with GFCC, GFCSU and USIU develop and implement transaction monitoring rules, reports, and other tools to detect potential criminal activity. They investigate suspicious financial behavior and, when necessary, file Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) or refer cases to internal compliance partners for global reporting. These teams also manage risk related to politically exposed persons (PEPs) through sanctions screening and enhanced due diligence processes, as well as improper payments that may signal bribery, corruption, or other illicit conduct. GFCSU and USIU play a vital role in ensuring compliance with key regulations, including the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), USA PATRIOT Act, and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. They also support law enforcement by providing critical information to combat money laundering, terrorist financing, credit card fraud, identity theft, and other financial crimes. How will you make an impact in this role: Customers who present higher money laundering or terrorist financing risks are subject to periodic enhanced due diligence reviews. The USIU’s High-Risk Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) Team is responsible for conducting annual investigative reviews of high-risk customers who hold U.S. issued products with American Express.

Requirements

  • Two or more years of combined experience in a related field, such as compliance, law enforcement, legal, audit, fraud investigations, banking/financial services industry
  • Strong analytical and research skills with the ability to identify and resolve complex issues
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Effective time management and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate within a team environment

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years of experience in AML or EDD investigations
  • Basic understanding of BSA/AML requirements and Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council guidelines as they relate to EDD in general
  • Experience guiding processes and mentoring others, with the ability to support team development and share expertise.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • CAMS certification

Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough, comprehensive EDD reviews of high-risk customers utilizing a variety of research and investigative tools, while adhering to procedures, guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
  • Use a variety of internal and external systems to carry out compliance functions
  • Produce detailed summary and analysis of customer and transactional activity and, when appropriate, refer potentially suspicious activity to the SAR and/or Account Termination process(es)
  • Collaborate with compliance partners across the enterprise to ensure proper review and risk assessment of high-risk customers
  • Work effectively to meet aggressive inventory deadlines and support management objectives
  • Build strong relationships with strategic partners across the GFCSU and USIU to ensure effective coordination of significant investigations
  • Ability to multi-task and pivot quickly in a fast-changing environment
