About The Position

The Ammonia Refrigeration Supervisor is part of our management team responsible for employees and processes in the operation and maintenance of the plant utility systems including but not limited to the ammonia refrigeration, hot water and anti-microbial distribution systems. This position reports to the Maintenance Manager.

Requirements

  • At least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • RETA training and certification of CRST
  • RETA training and certification of CIRO will be considered based on experience
  • Completion of an Industrial ammonia refrigeration training program
  • In depth knowledge in all aspects of refrigeration equipment/systems (IE., pneumatics, plumbing, electrical, controls, etc.)
  • Hands on experience with ammonia refrigeration systems and PSM/ARM programs
  • 5+ years of verifiable ammonia refrigeration experience operating and maintaining ammonia refrigeration systems of more than 10,000 pounds of ammonia
  • 2+ years of supervisor and/or leadership experience
  • Knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Working knowledge of Parts Inventory Systems and Work Order Systems
  • Strong self-motivational skills
  • Ability to reprioritize as issues arise
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and/or schematics
  • Knowledge of 5S to maintain a safe and clean work environment
  • Must be flexible to support business needs that include weekends and other off shifts
  • Strong organizational and decision-making skills
  • Strong leadership, communication and problem-solving skills
  • Must be legally eligible to work in accordance with federal and state law.
  • Must have dependable transportation to and from DG Food facilities, no exceptions.
  • Must be able to work various hours/holidays/weekends as required.
  • Ability to work in a cold and wet environment.
  • Ability to work in an office environment.
  • Ability to lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operation of ammonia refrigeration systems, ensuring they run safely and efficiently.
  • Develop and implement both preventive and predictive maintenance schedules to minimize downtime and ensure system reliability.
  • Troubleshoot system issues and lead technicians in the repair of refrigeration equipment, including compressors, pumps, and condensers.
  • Conduct routine inspections to observe the operating condition of all equipment and identify any necessary repairs or adjustments.
  • Perform proper installation, maintenance and adjustments of all associated equipment in site utilities and the refrigeration cycle. Recognize potential problems, worn parts and perform necessary repairs
  • Knowledge for the operation and repair of two stage anhydrous ammonia refrigeration system, screw compressor and booster, reciprocating compressor, rotary booster, evaporative condensers, ammonia pumps and controls and associated system equipment.
  • Troubleshoot malfunctions in a wide variety of wastewater equipment, steam equipment, compressors, and Anhydrous Ammonia refrigeration system problems with or without the aid of blueprints, operation manuals or schematics.
  • Oversee other utility systems, but not limited to, such instantaneous hot water heaters, compressed air and antimicrobial distribution systems
  • Supervises and coordinates daily activities of employees in utilities and refrigeration including establishes work schedules that support production activities that provide for timely repair and maintenance of facility buildings, grounds and equipment to established safety and health standards
  • Enforce strict safety procedures and ensure all maintenance activities adhere to federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Facilitate and manage the facility's Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management Plan (RMP) programs, which are critical for controlling the risks associated with hazardous chemicals like ammonia.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, inspections, and safety measures. Prepare for and participate in regulatory and internal compliance audits.
  • Lead or be a part of the hazardous materials (HAZMAT) response team and oversee emergency action plans related to ammonia leaks.
  • Immediately inform Manager/Supervisor of safety, sanitation, and quality issues.
  • Adhere to all company Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP’s)
  • Help to maintain the highest quality of finished product and is a member of the facility HACCP team to help maintain sanitary equipment design and food safety standards.
  • Lead, train, and mentor a team of refrigeration technicians and operators.
  • Organize and manage the team's workload, prioritizing tasks to meet production schedules.
  • Conduct training for team members in proper operating techniques, new procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Set performance goals for the team, monitor work quality, and provide feedback and coaching.
  • Prepare reports on system performance, maintenance activities, and issues for management review.
  • Assist in budget preparation and control expenditures related to the utilities and refrigeration department.
  • Collaborate with vendors and parts room staff to manage the inventory of spare parts and supplies.
  • Coordinate and oversee the work of outside contractors, ensuring they meet safety and quality standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
