About The Position

Provides American Sign Language (ASL) instruction to secondary students by creating a classroom environment that develops competencies, knowledge, and skills in accordance with each student’s ability. Provides inclusive and accessible learning opportunities for all students while teaching ASL and Deaf/deaf culture.

Requirements

Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree.
Must possess or be eligible for Virginia licensure and completed a major in American Sign Language or 24 semester hours above the intermediate level in American Sign Language.
Hold a current, valid qualified or professional certification by the American Sign Language Teachers Association; or hold a current, valid Virginia Quality Assurance Screening Level III Interpreting Certification or higher issued by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; or hold a current, valid Registry of Interpreters for Deaf certification at least in one of the following: Certification of Interpretation (CI), Certification of Deaf Interpretation (CDI), Reverse Skills Certification (RSC), or Comprehensive Skills Certification (CSC); or hold a current, valid National Association for the Deaf Level IV Certification or higher, and earned a minimum of three semester hours of methods of teaching foreign languages at the elementary and secondary levels from a regionally accredited college or university.
Knowledge of and be sensitive to the needs of a diverse student population.

Knowledge and use of curriculum content (subject matter and skills) associated with the instructional assignment.

Possession of interpersonal skills to build effective, respectful professional relationships with peers, specialists, students, and the school community.
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls.
Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.

Experience in computer technology preferred or desirable and/or willing to pursue appropriate technology training as required by position.
