About The Position

POSITION SUMMARY : The Ambulatory Medical Director (AMD) works collaboratively and in partnership with the System Chief, Site Chief, System Administrative Director, Administrative Manager and Practice Managers to oversee the overall clinical operations of the OBGYN ambulatory practices. The AMD collaborates with the Site Chief, faculty, and BMC ambulatory administration to establish clinical policies and practices, maintain quality, patient access and experience, volume, and financial goals for the practice. The AMD will be evaluated by the Site Chair and System Administrative Director, using performance metrics established annually, with input from faculty, BMC operational and nursing leadership. This role comes with 20% protected administrative time. Position: Ambulatory Medical Director Department: Obstetrics & Gynecology Schedule: Full Time ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES: Roles and Responsibilities General Planning, implementing, directing, and evaluating the clinical services of the ambulatory practice consistent with the goals of BMC-Brighton, BMCAP, and the department. Ensures alignment with institutional strategic priorities, access goals, and health equity initiatives. Oversees the work of physicians, advanced practice professionals (APP), and staff to continuously improve the performance in the six quality domains of safety, timeliness (access), equity, efficiency, effectiveness, and patient-centered care. Uses data and dashboards to monitor performance and drive improvement. Oversees and improves performance and consistency of scheduling, space and staff utilization, revenue cycle management, and technologies such as the electronic health record and telehealth. Leads efforts to standardize clinical practices across sites where appropriate. Builds cooperative partnerships with internal and external practices, referral sources, and community health centers. Works with the hospital and department leadership teams to measurably improve patient experience. Works to improve the efficiency and satisfaction of clinicians, staff, and administrative team members in the practice, by partnering with the leadership of BMC-Brighton, BMCAP, and the department. Participates in cross-ambulatory activities and initiatives to improve clinical services and operations and to support overall goals of BMC-Brighton and BMCAP. Participates regularly in appropriate administrative meetings including, but not limited to: Department faculty and staff meetings. Weekly operations meetings with administrative leadership and practice staff. Other committees or meetings related to ambulatory practice. Participates in professional development programs offered by BMC, BMCAP, and other entities (e.g. AAMC). Models professionalism and adherence to professional and regulatory standards. In collaboration with department leadership, supports and provides oversight to the conduct of clinical research activities in the practice, including study recruitment and study visits. In collaboration with the Chair and other practice leadership, provides oversight to the development, interpretation, and implementation of policies, standards, and guidelines consistent with institutional and regulatory requirements. Operations and Administration Leads or provides input at regular meetings with physicians and APPs related to ambulatory practice operations. Sets clear priorities and follow up actions Maintains oversight of physician and APP schedules (e.g., appointment templates, away time). Participates in the recruitment and selection process for physicians and APPs. Provides an oversight structure for clinical practice of APPs. Participates in the yearly performance appraisal of key leaders (e.g., Administrative Manager, Lead APP, and Practice Managers). Builds a diverse workforce and leadership team through recruitment, mentorship, training, and creation of opportunities for growth. Participates in hiring decisions, including clinical support staff, and the administrative team. Addresses physician and APP performance and adherence to standards in conjunction with the Chair. Participates in the onboarding of new physicians and APPs. Formulates and implements medical practice policies and procedures. Performs periodic review of practice management functions in collaboration with the System Chief (or designee) and administrative leaders. Incorporates Lean, quality improvement, and evidence-based practices. Maintains familiarity and competency with relevant IT systems (including Epic). Ensures adherence to medical record documentation and billing requirements, reviewing data and audits in collaboration with the Chair. Financial Management and Business Development In conjunction with the System Chief, provides insight into the formulation and management of the BMC-Brighton operating and capital budget, including visit and procedure volumes, and provider productivity Participates in and/or leads planning for new program development and identifies opportunities for growth. Works with leadership team to monitor practice growth and staffing needs and develops business plans to justify added or modified staffing or resources.

Requirements

  • Board certified or eligible.
  • Minimum of three years clinical experience beyond residency/fellowship training
  • Minimum 50% clinical effort, including at least two to four ½-day ambulatory practice sessions per week.
  • Demonstrated progressive management experience and skills

  • Professional leadership experience and/or formal education/training encouraged (e.g., MBA, MPH, MS) but not required
