About The Position

The Alternative School Mentor is responsible for supporting and leading high-quality youth and teen programs that promote academic success, healthy lifestyles, leadership development, and positive self-identity for members ages 5–18, with a primary focus on teens ages 13–18. This role blends direct service delivery with program coordination, staff leadership, data management, and community engagement to ensure a safe, engaging, and mission-driven Club environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate’s degree or coursework in a related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working with youth; teen programming experience strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of youth development principles, particularly for ages 13–18.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to motivate youth, manage behavior, and create engaging programs.
  • Basic computer and data entry skills.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within three months of hire).
  • Background check clearance, negative TB test, clean driving record, and reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate age-appropriate programs and activities aligned with organizational goals and youth development outcomes.
  • Establish and maintain weekly and monthly program calendars and ensure accurate documentation of activities.
  • Create a welcoming environment that encourages participation, skill development, and positive behavior.
  • Ensure members receive guidance, instruction, and constructive feedback across academic, athletic, artistic, and life-skills programming.
  • Lead and support all teen program initiatives, events, and teen nights.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with youth, teens, and their families.
  • Register new members and conduct club orientations.
  • Provide consistent guidance, mentoring, and role modeling to members.
  • Conduct outreach and recruitment to engage underserved youth and retain teen members.
  • Supervise and support staff and volunteers during assigned programs and events.
  • Assign tasks to volunteers as outlined in lesson plans and program needs.
  • Participate as a team member to support overall Club operations, including assisting in other program areas as needed.
  • Ensure timely and accurate entry of member and program data into tracking systems.
  • Monitor program areas to maintain safety, cleanliness, and proper use of facilities and equipment.
  • Maintain accountability for member safety and adherence to Club policies.
  • Assist with transportation, including driving the Club van, when required.
  • Assist with program planning, evaluation, and reporting on attendance and participation.
  • Support budget awareness and responsible use of program resources.
  • Research and apply best practices in youth and teen development.
  • Maintain effective internal communication with Club staff and leadership.
  • Build external relationships with schools, community partners, and parents to enhance program effectiveness.
  • Participate in special events, county-wide initiatives, and program quality improvement efforts.
