About The Position

Under the supervision of the Airport Manager, performs for the City of St. George a variety of technical, general operations, maintenance, and surveillance duties associated with the safe, efficient, and continuous operation and maintenance of the airport. This position involves exercising independent judgment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of four (4) years paid work experience in maintenance of buildings, grounds, and mechanical equipment. Electrical Experience preferable. Minimum of one (1) year full time operations or maintenance experience at a public use airport preferable.
  • Current certification or ability to become certified in airport rescue and firefighting as required by Federal Aviation Regulation Part 139.319 within 60 days.
  • Must possess a valid driver license.
  • Obtain within 365 days and maintain throughout employment a valid Utah State Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicators license.
  • Knowledge of: Hand and power tools, methods, and materials used in general repair and maintenance work.
  • Federal Aviation Regulation Part 139 and other applicable rules and regulations pertaining to the operation and maintenance of a commercial service airport.
  • Ability to: Read and interpret blueprints, circuit diagrams, and various types of operational and safety manuals.
  • Satisfactorily pass a ten-year criminal history background check as required by the Transportation Security Administration.
  • Pass a City of St. George approved physical which shows the employee to be in good physical health and able to safely perform the required aircraft rescue and firefighting duties.
  • Understand and communicate clearly in English, and communicate via radio transmissions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, vendors, airport users and tenants, and the general public.
  • Check, lubricate, and maintain various types of electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Troubleshoot system malfunctions and recognize problems and take quick corrective action in addressing potential hazards or existing discrepancies.

Responsibilities

  • Performs continuous daily inspections of all airport property to ensure compliance with Federal Aviation Administration Regulation Part 139 as well as other applicable federal, state, and local rules and regulations. Issues Notices to Airmen (NOTAM) as appropriate.
  • Ensures the proper operation and maintenance of all public buildings and grounds at the airport, including airfield lighting systems, pavement areas, airport terminal building, and other City owned facilities.
  • Monitors airport operations and exercises enforcement authority to ensure that there are no unauthorized activities at the airport which violate applicable federal, state, and local rules and regulations. Assists in overseeing security in all areas of the airport.
  • Coordinates emergency response to airport emergencies in accordance with the airport emergency plan and other prescribed procedures, initiates actions to ensure proper notifications of appropriate agencies, and takes steps to minimize emergency impacts on other airport operations.
  • Performs aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) duties as required by Federal Aviation Regulation Part 139.319.
  • Maintains records and daily logs of airport inspections and corrective actions. Plans and schedules preventative maintenance programs and coordinates with the Airport Manager, airport users, and tenants. Assists the Airport Manager with the preparation and maintenance of airport compliance documents.
  • Operates equipment such as two-way radios, trucks, graders, backhoes, front end loaders, mowers, sweepers, trimmers, etc. to maintain grounds and keep airport property clear of debris, rocks, and other unsafe items. May supervise a work crew assigned to airport improvement or maintenance projects. Determines and performs minor repairs on a wide variety of equipment, plumbing, and physical structures such as heating and air conditioning systems, compressors, pumps, electrical systems, sprinkling systems, etc. Obtains assistance from outside sources when necessary.
  • Applies fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides to airport property as needed.
  • Requisitions equipment, supplies, and materials, and assists with the preparation of equipment specifications. Provides input into airport operational and maintenance budget for the Airport Manager by estimating annual maintenance expenditures. Performs calculations to determine material quantities and costs.
  • Works with other City departments, airport tenants, and outside vendors to address service needs involving water, power, sewer, road, and grounds keeping projects.
  • Maintains working knowledge of FAA regulations affecting airport operations.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
