About The Position

The incumbent in this position is responsible for conducting and completing aviation missions in support of FDLE investigations and mutual aid incidents. Additionally, when the incumbent is not involved in aviation activities he/she will perform activities in support of the Aviation bureau. Responsible for supervision of staff and incumbent spends the majority of time communicating with, motivating, training and evaluating members while planning and directing their work. This position has the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline subordinate employees or effectively recommend such action. Refer to agency policy as these types of personnel actions will require final approval from Command Staff up to Senior Executive level in your Chain of Command.

Requirements

  • Certification by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a commercial pilot with an instrument rating, possess a multi-engine fixed wing rating, at least 50 hours of night flight time, 50 hours of instrument flight time, 500 hours multi-engine Pilot in Command and a minimum of 1500 hours total flight time.
  • Must possess or obtain a valid FAA Class II medical certificate prior to employment.
  • Commercial pilot license with rating certified by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration with an instrument rating
  • Current Florida Law Enforcement Officer as defined by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC)
  • Incumbent must possess a valid FAA Class II Medical Certificate and be considered in good physical shape
  • Be able to reside in the region where the aircraft is based

  • Type rating for a Beechcraft King Air 350
  • Flight instructor certification

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing, coordinating and supporting the Special Missions section by developing and maintaining policies and procedures relevant to the Section’s area of responsibility
  • Maintaining the control of I & E payments in compliance with FDLE Policies and Procedures
  • Participating in the discussion, development, revision, implementation, and follow-up of Division initiatives through meetings, conferences, and other forums with regional agents, managers, and Command Staff
  • Preparing memoranda, exhibits, reports and other documents in support of the duties and responsibilities cited herein
  • Preparing memoranda and correspondence for both internal and external matters
  • Participating in the discussion, development, revision, implementation and follow-up of Division initiatives through meetings, conferences and other forms with first line supervisors, mid-managers and Division Command Staff
  • Piloting state owned and leased aircraft in support of the transportation of the Governor of Florida and other dignitaries as assigned
  • Assisting when requested for aerial search and rescue, tracking of individuals suspected of criminal activity and periodic aerial transportation of arrestees
  • Reporting to the Assistant Special Agent in Charge on all issues associated with the aviation unit
  • Review trip logs, operational cost reports and ensure reports are submitted in a timely and accurate manner
  • Review the Flight Log and Aircraft Maintenance and Condition Report and maintenance requirements to ensure the maintenance is performed at required intervals
  • Inspect and review repair facilities as necessary to ensure adequate repairs are made
  • Coordinates with other agencies for opportunities that would benefit the section, including the acquisition of equipment, and parts, support and cost sharing of training
  • Review all flight practices and procedures to ensure the Aviation Section is performing all missions as safely as possible
