About The Position

Teach community college air conditioning and refrigeration courses to a diverse student population. Participate in a coordinated instructional program that includes: pneumatics, direct digital controls and energy conservation. Interface with air conditioning and refrigeration industry to ensure currency of technology. Participate in department and division activities, including student and community outreach and recruitment. Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities. Participate in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success. Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle. Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in department and division meetings. Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner. Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties. Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions. Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or are students who are historically underserved. The ideal candidate should have experience in this area with African American, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other disproportionately impacted students. Work cooperatively with staff and students. Evening and/or weekend assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

Requirements

  • Any Bachelor’s degree or higher AND two (2) years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment OR Any Associate degree AND six (6) years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment OR Possess a valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject matter area.

  • Equivalent qualifications may include related education, training, employment and professional experience that would be equal to the required degree(s) and experience in this field as determined by the District Equivalency Committee.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineering degree in air conditioning and refrigeration.
  • Possession of an Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractor’s License.
  • Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ) certification.
  • Experience in pneumatics, direct digital controls, energy management, building automation systems including electro-mechanical controls, compressor rebuilding, refrigeration defrost systems, psychrometrics, duct design, two stage refrigeration, construction estimating, building codes, mechanical drafting and blueprint reading, heat load calculations, air measurement, single phase and three phase transformer connections, recycle and recovery equipment, refrigerant pipe sizing.
  • Demonstrated leadership, project coordination, and data analysis skills.
  • Contracting and project management experience.
  • Effective hands-on mechanical experience.
  • Knowledge of air conditioning industry specific computer applications.
  • Teaching experience, preferably at a community college, or similar educational environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to create a dynamic learning environment that values instructor/student interaction.
  • Ability to adapt teaching pedagogy to the knowledge of each individual and course.
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to integrating new technologies into the learning process, such as interactive technologies for on campus, hybrid, and online courses.
  • Knowledge of software and applications such as Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Zoom, spreadsheet, database, PowerPoint, web design, and LMS such as Canvas.
  • Culturally responsive in interactions with students, faculty, staff, and community members who span a diverse range of languages, nationalities and ethnicities, socio-economic levels, ages, identities, abilities, and educational experiences.
  • Driven to help students from historically underrepresented and/or marginalized groups,nontraditional students, speakers of other languages, and students with learning disabilities.
  • Experience with and commitment to working with culturally and ethnically diverse groups.
