About The Position

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation. The Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Legal Matters provides legal guidance to the Police Department and is responsible for advising all members of the Department on all legal matters affecting the Department, including major criminal and civil litigation and important legislative and judicial developments. The office monitors and facilitates the relationship between the Department and the rest of the criminal justice system and assists members of the service in interpreting and enforcing state, federal, and local laws; ensures that the policies and practices of the department are lawful and are fairly applied; and develops legislation in accordance with the needs of the Department and public safety concerns. As an eDiscovery Attorney, you will support the NYPD Legal Bureau in identifying, collecting, managing, reviewing and producing electronic records and ensuring compliance with discovery obi gallons and investigations. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career attorney interested in technology-driven legal practice. A Computer Science degree or background is not required.

Requirements

  • Admission to the New York State Bar; and either "2" or "3" below.
  • One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar; or
  • Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086).
  • Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.
  • To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.
  • To be assigned to AL III candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting in preserving, collecting, and organizing large volumes of electronically stored information (ESI) for litigation, Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) and investigations.
  • Supporting Legal Bureau attorneys in identifying relevant electronically stored information.
  • Creating document databases using eDiscovery platforms, preparing document review workflow, productions and privilege logs.
  • Assisting Legal Bureau attorneys in negotiation of ESI discovery obligations with external parties and represent the NYPD's interests in court conferences and other proceedings.
  • Providing ongoing eDiscovery platform end user training and technical support lo Legal Bureau personnel.
  • Performing hands-on early case assessment, document review and analysis using eDiscovery platforms.
  • Developing practical solutions for document reviews and productions.
  • Serving as the main point of contact to eDiscovery vendors and NYPD technical staff.
  • Advising and support Legal Bureau personnel with early case assessment and case review strategy.
