The Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics seeks a Laboratory Services Manager (LSM) to lead the Skilling Laboratory and administer the health and safety of the laboratory. This position will organize the logistics, materials and equipment needs of multiple Skilling-based courses every quarter. The LSM will also interact with students to provide suggestions on how to tackle prototyping and manufacturing challenges in their course projects. The LSM will work closely with faculty and course assistants to set up and schedule classroom lectures and lab sessions, provide user access and source the necessary equipment and supplies. This position will be responsible for troubleshooting equipment issues, coordinating repair and maintaining an inventory of properly working equipment. A key responsibility is ensuring safety and providing training in the proper usage of all equipment and prototyping approaches including 3D printers, laser cutters, software (CAD/CAM, PCB board layout, etc.), robotics, electronics, soldering, composite materials, and more. The LSM will design and fabricate prototype designs to meet the needs of the department and guide students in the design and implementation of class projects. This position will report to the Director of Finance and Operations and will work closely with the department Chair, faculty, and lecturers to establish and fulfill the goals of the Skilling Laboratory.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Understanding of academic research facility needs.
  • General background in a discipline related to the work of specific lab(s).
  • Knowledge and experience in managing facilities, operations, maintenance, space, and equipment administration in a research or teaching setting.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects in a complex and technical environment.
  • Familiarity with health and safety compliance regulations.

  • Prior experience working in a laboratory setting.
  • Advanced knowledge of 3D printing, laser cutters, and prototyping equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability and interest in interacting with and mentoring students (at any level).
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the operation and management of a teaching and prototyping facility - the Skilling Laboratory; schedule and coordinate use of equipment and/or facility.
  • Administer health and safety programs and ensure safety compliance; act as resource on safety procedures; provide instruction on a routine basis; liaise with school and/or university health and safety office as appropriate.
  • Negotiate and monitor equipment service contracts and warranties with vendors.
  • Determine equipment needs, organize the purchase of equipment, prepare quotes, and oversee installation of equipment and instruments.
  • Perform and/or coordinate preventative maintenance and repair of all equipment; determine proper method of repair.
  • Oversee layout, allocation, and tracking of space among multiple courses/users; manage logistics of laboratory moves; implement plans for renovations of equipment and or/facilities in collaboration with facilities services staff.
  • May direct work of other staff, including supervision, hiring, and terminations; determine staffing needs, and ensure efficient utilization of staff.
  • Flexibility in completing other assigned duties.
