About The Position

Hendrick Motorsports is currently seeking an Aerodynamics Engineer to join our team. The Aerodynamics Engineer II is responsible for developing advanced aerodynamic solutions for motorsports applications by analyzing, designing, and optimizing components to enhance vehicle performance in areas such as speed, handling, and efficiency. The primary focus of this position is delivering aerodynamic performance through the analysis of CFD, wind tunnel, and track data, while innovating throughout the design and development process. The role involves preparing for, executing, and reporting on aerodynamic testing, including but not limited to wind tunnel, track, and CFD testing. Collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams is integral to ensure the seamless integration of aerodynamic strategies in a high-performance motorsports environment. The ideal candidate is outgoing, creative, and well-spoken, with at least 2 years of experience in the automotive or motorsports industry and a strong, diverse problem-solving skillset.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2+ years of work experience in aerodynamic design, preferably in motorsports or high-performance vehicle development.
  • Proficiency in CFD tools (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, STAR-CCM+, OpenFOAM) and wind tunnel testing in a racing context.
  • Strong knowledge of fluid dynamics, with a focus on downforce optimization and drag reduction for motorsports applications.
  • Experience with CAD software (e.g., NX, CATIA, SolidWorks) for aerodynamic component design.
  • Proficiency in data analytics tools and methodologies for processing and interpreting large datasets, including telemetry and test results.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, for developing complex spreadsheets, performance models, and data visualization.
  • Familiarity with data acquisition systems and telemetry analysis commonly used in motorsports.
  • Analytical problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Conceptual Thinking - ability to think in terms of abstract ideas.
  • Strong communication skills for reporting technical findings and supporting collaborative development.
  • Capability to operate effectively in high-pressure and results-driven environments.
  • Honesty/Integrity - ability to be truthful and be seen as credible in the workplace.
  • Quality Work - responsible for producing quality, to-specification work.
  • Reliability - demonstrate being dependable and trustworthy.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with professional racing teams or competitive motorsports.
  • Understanding of vehicle dynamics and its interaction with aerodynamic performance.
  • Knowledge of NASCAR, FIA, IndyCar, or other motorsport governing body regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform aerodynamic analysis and optimization of racing vehicles using advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools.
  • Design and refine aerodynamic components such as wings, splitters, diffusers, and underbodies to maximize downforce and minimize drag.
  • Collaborate with race engineering and chassis design teams to integrate aerodynamic solutions into overall vehicle design.
  • Analyze track test data and telemetry to correlate with an emphasis on correlation of lab data and assess aerodynamic performance and recommend adjustments as such.
  • Conduct wind tunnel testing, including model setup, data collection, and result interpretation, to enhance on-track performance.
  • Develop tools and methodologies for aerodynamic data analysis and visualization to support design decisions.
  • Contribute to vehicle development programs by focusing on aerodynamic improvements that enhance cornering stability, straight-line speed, and tire management.
  • Ensure all aerodynamic designs comply with motorsports regulations and standards.
  • Other duties as assigned by manager.
