About The Position

The Aerial Technician / Vector Control Technician supports unmanned aerial mosquito control operations and performs general vector control duties when drone operations are not active. This position assists with equipment preparation, mapping, battery management, field inspections, larval treatments, ULV spraying, and basic laboratory tasks. Under the guidance of the Aerial Coordinator, the technician ensures that aerial operations are executed safely and efficiently while serving as a flexible member of the mosquito abatement team. When not engaged in aerial program duties, the technician performs field vector control work throughout the county.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • No prior experience required; however, experience in mosquito abatement, fieldwork, or technical operations is beneficial.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must obtain a Utah Public Health Pesticide Applicator License (training provided)
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and obtain a Utah license within 60 days
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with GIS or digital field data tools
  • Experience in pest control, agriculture, or outdoor fieldwork
  • Experience supporting UAS programs or aviation logistics

Responsibilities

  • Assist with transporting, staging, and preparing equipment for UAS mosquito control operations.
  • Support drone operations by preparing pesticide loads, managing batteries, and assisting with flight setup.
  • Conduct pre-flight and post-flight equipment checks under the supervision of the Aerial Coordinator.
  • Assist in basic equipment maintenance, cleaning, and repairs.
  • Assist with creating, uploading, and exporting flight maps using GIS tools.
  • Assist with coordinating property access and operational logistics for aerial missions.
  • Conduct field inspections of mosquito breeding habitats, standing water, and mapped sites.
  • Apply larvicides using hand, backpack, or ATV equipment.
  • Assist with ULV spraying operations as assigned.
  • Locate, evaluate, and treat mosquito larvae using integrated mosquito management (IMM) strategies.
  • Maintain accurate records of all treatments and inspections using iPads and GIS-based software.
  • Assist with setting and collecting mosquito traps.
  • Support sorting and basic specimen handling for mosquito identification.
  • Assist in preparing samples for qPCR testing under lab staff direction.
  • Maintain trap inventory, CO₂ supplies, and other surveillance materials.
  • Interact courteously and professionally with the public during field operations.
  • Respond to operational needs and support emergency mosquito-borne disease responses as assigned.
  • Carry a communication device during all scheduled work hours.
