Make a Difference in Public Health This Summer! 🦟🌿 Join the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (NDHHS) and play a key role in protecting communities across the state. These positions support Nebraska’s mosquito and tick surveillance programs—efforts that help detect and monitor diseases like West Nile virus (WNV) and keep residents informed and safe. Through this work, you’ll contribute to real-time public health data that: - Alerts communities when WNV is present so individuals can take steps to protect themselves - Keeps healthcare providers informed for better patient care - Helps local health departments and mosquito control teams decide when to take action - Tracks tick species and the diseases they may carry across Nebraska What You’ll Do: In this hands-on role, you’ll gain valuable experience while supporting important field and lab activities, including: Sorting and processing mosquito samples for testing Coordinating the submission of samples to the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) Assisting with statewide tick surveillance efforts Responding to public questions about West Nile virus and other vector-borne diseases Supporting training for local health departments on surveillance practices Participating in community education and outreach efforts Assignment Details: Duration: May 1, 2026 – October 31, 2026 Hours: 35 hours/week during the summer Why This Opportunity is Great for You: This is an excellent opportunity for students or early-career professionals interested in public health, environmental science, biology, or related fields.
