About The Position

The Advising Specialist supports students participating in the Upward Bound Program by providing academic guidance to promote college readiness and success. Responsibilities include assisting students with tutoring, testing, referrals, financial aid, and career exploration. The position also offers individualized support and career counseling to help students identify and achieve their educational goals. This position receives general direction from the Project Director of Upward Bound and exercises no supervision. NOTE: This is a security sensitive position and an appropriate background investigation will be made on applicants being strongly considered for this position.

Requirements

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university
  • More than one year of work experience
  • Knowledge of academic and career counseling techniques, methods, and procedures
  • Knowledge of needs and challenges of special student populations as assigned
  • Knowledge of general educational systems, curricula, and degree requirements
  • Knowledge of college policies and procedures related to admissions and academic programs
  • Knowledge of program-specific requirements within the assigned area of responsibility
  • Knowledge of federal regulations governing UB/TRIO programs
  • Skills in using Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Skills in communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Skills in establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff, and external partners
  • Skills in interpreting transcripts, standardized test scores, and other academic data to support student success
  • Skills in maintaining accurate records, documentation, and reporting in compliance with institutional policies
  • Ability to provide academic guidance, support, and direction to students
  • Ability to assess individual student needs and recommend appropriate support, interventions, or referrals
  • Ability to advise students to achieve short- and long-term academic and career goals
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify solutions, evaluate potential consequences, and implement effective recommendations
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including students, faculty, project directors, institutions, and community service agencies
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations and educational materials as needed
  • Ability to adapt counseling strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners and populations
  • Ability to maintain current knowledge of best practices in academic and career counseling
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and support programs or initiatives within the assigned area
