Responsibilities The Cardiology Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) promotes professional development and the advancement of nursing practice, facilitates the provision of quality, evidence based care and is a change agent/role model. The CNS demonstrates a firm clinical knowledge base in specialty practice and systems theory. The CNS conducts and facilitates patient care consultation and provides resources to assess the impact and appropriateness of practice on patient outcomes. The CNS uses clinical nursing expertise in diagnosis and treatment to prevent, remediate, or alleviate illness and promote health with a defined specialty population CNS practice is the translation of clinical expertise into nursing care provided either directly or by influencing nurses and nursing personnel through evidence-based nursing care standards. CNS practice also influences systems to mobilize, change, or transform these systems to facilitate expertly designed nursing intervention. Some CNSs may expand their nursing practice to include prescriptive authority for pharmacologic agents to augment the care that they are responsible and accountable to provide.

Requirements

  • Graduate education with preparation as a CNS as required by state licensure.
  • Clinical experience requirements are dependent upon the specific position, and include a minimum of 2 years of experience in a related field.
  • Current Oregon state RN licensure and DEA certificate, fully compliant with state requirements for Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS).
  • Current ACLS from the American Heart Association.
