About The Position

This position is responsible for providing care to Orthopedic Trauma patients acting as an assistant to the physicians in the clinic following established standards and practices. Work in a team capacity with fellowship trained orthopedic trauma surgeons in the management of time sensitive and high acuity Orthopedic Trauma patients with no outward referral in a high volume practice. This is to include the initial evaluation and acute management, surgical first assistant with special skill set, flexibility with irregular working hours. Orthopedic trauma case load and acuity is that of a level one trauma center. Can also expect to participate in join replacement, and reconstructions, and complex infection management. The delivery of professional nursing care at Stormont-Vail Health is guided by Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring and the theory of Shared governance, both of which are congruent with the mission, vision, and values of the organization.

Requirements

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited PA/APRN program.
  • Meets educational preparation or other qualifications within specified time frames as determined/outlined by specific department policy.
  • Registered Nurse - KSBN Must have valid APRN licensure. Be certified as a nurse practitioner by a recognized national certifying body that has established standards for nurse practitioners. Required or Physician Assistant (PA) - KSBHA Required
  • Additional certification may be required in certain patient care settings or populations. The department director will provide specific information and the time frame in which such certification may be attained at the time of hire/transfer into department.
  • For the first 24 months of employment, incumbents coming from an R.N. role in the acute care setting will be assigned to the Workforce Cohort of APRN’s that may be designated to work at the bedside in the event of a critical need. Essential skills training and orientation would be provided at the time of deployment if needed.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with surgeons in providing patient care in both a hospital and office clinic setting.
  • Assist surgeons in providing patient consultation and evaluation and provisional management of the patient with orthopedic injuries.
  • Assist with surgical procedures in the operating room and other locations.
  • Provide inpatient care including hospital rounds and executing plans of care per supervising physician including relaying orders, coordination of admissions and discharges.
  • Provide documentation of services provided in compliance with established medical records, medical staff and billings procedures.
  • Exercise initiative, problem solving, decision making.
  • Demonstrates a dedication to lifelong learning and personal growth in knowledge and medical skills.
  • Interpret labs and imaging in the care of patients.
  • Reviews records and findings, including the interpretation of critical care lab values to determine patient stability in the critically ill poly-traumatized patient.
  • Develop proficiency in performing thorough history and physical examinations including orthopedic trauma examinations.
  • Provide assistance in surgery with tasks such as retractions, minor procedures and develeop proficiency in suturing.
  • Assist in the management of free tissue transfer and wound salvage orthopedic practice.
  • May be required to develop proficiency working under the microscope.
  • Develop proficiency in monitoring labs and sensors in the postop care of complex soft tissue reconstructions.
  • Attends regular meetings and calls.
  • Manage medical emergencies.
  • Ensures that care delivered to patients is provided according to the Stormont-Vail Health mission, strategic plans, and all internal/external regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Practices within the Kansas Nurse Practice Act and within the guidelines of management protocols.
  • Supports the established care models of Stormont Vail Regional Health Center.
  • Complies with all policies, standards, mandatory training and requirements of Stormont Vail Health
  • Performs other duties as assigned
