About The Position

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) delivers comprehensive critical care within the Medical ICU through a 24/7 rotational model. This encompasses primary management of MICU patients, participation in the procedure service, handling oncology critical care consults, and covering an expanded MICU service. The Medical ICU team specializes in managing critically ill patients with conditions such as Respiratory Failure (ARDS, COPD, Asthma), Shock (Septic, hypovolemic, cardiogenic), Hepatic failure – GI bleed, Renal failure, metabolic altered mental status, and DKA. The Nurse Practitioner, as an advanced practice nurse, is responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management, including autonomous decision-making in assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments. Their scope also extends to family support, teaching, staff education, consultation, and research. APNs provide holistic care to patients in the Medical Intensive Care Unit or related inpatient units at the University of Chicago, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and utilizing advanced clinical skills to manage patient caseloads, assess, diagnose, initiate treatments, perform independent nursing interventions, and evaluate care.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree (or equivalent, if license received prior to July 1, 2001) from an accredited school/college of nursing required (for NP)
  • Ability to obtain Illinois advanced practice nurse (APN) license by start date required (for NP)
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse required (for NP)
  • AANC certification as an ACNP and/or ANP-BC required (for NP)
  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant Master’s program (for PA)
  • Current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois PA licensure / registration (for PA)
  • Must have or be able to qualify for Illinois and DEA prescribing numbers (for PA)
  • Must have AGACNP certification but FNP or ANP will be considered with relevant experience as a PA or NP (for PA)
  • Current BLS/ACLS certification (for PA)

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum two years of critical care clinical nursing experience with demonstrated clinical competence in patient care, teaching and management of patients with critical illness, and knowledge about clinical aspects of critical care including protocol therapy (for NP)

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct management of critically ill patients in the MICU
  • Perform admissions, daily management, and coordination of care
  • Collaborate closely with attending physicians, fellows, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Participate in rounds, handoffs, and escalation of care
  • Provide continuous 24/7 coverage for an additional MICU service
  • Function with a mix of autonomy and collaboration depending on census and acuity
  • Ensure continuity of care across shifts with structured handoffs
  • Rotate through and perform bedside procedures including lumbar puncture, PICC placement, paracentesis, and thoracentesis
  • Maintain procedural competency and volume expectations
  • Respond to and manage ICU-level consults for oncology patients
  • Partner with oncology and ICU teams for escalation and co-management
  • Manage a caseload of patients
  • Exercise autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments
  • Provide family support, teaching, staff education, consultation, and research
  • Assess, diagnose, initiate delegated medical treatments, perform independent nursing interventions, and evaluate care
  • Provide a model of care that is shaped by theory, expanded by science, research and reflective practice and is identified by a holistic and comprehensive approach to the patients
