Riverside is currently seeking a full time Advance Practice Provide for Breast and Plastic Surgery to join our team in Newport News, Virginia. The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant will work collaboratively with breast surgeons and plastic surgeons to manage patients throughout the entire continuum of surgical care, including the high-risk breast clinic, pre-operative assessment, and post-operative follow-up. For physician assistant candidates, responsibilities may also include limited intra-operative assistance. This role involves managing benign breast disease, supporting active breast cancer cases, and providing post-surgical care for plastic surgery, including tissue expander management and wound care.

Requirements

  • Education: Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN) for Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Adult- Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) Master’s Degree in P.A. studies from an accredited Physician Assistant program
  • License/Certification: Current state licensure (NP or PA-C), DEA registration, and BLS certification. As part of maintaining NAPBC accreditation, additional APP certifications may be required over time.
  • Experience: Previous experience in a surgical setting, specifically oncology, breast surgery, or plastics is highly preferred.
  • Skills: Strong clinical assessment skills, ability to work independently, and excellent patient communication.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical Care (Breast Surgery & Program Support): Manage high-risk breast clinics, assess benign breast disease, and provide care for patients with active breast cancer. Perform comprehensive physical assessments, order/interpret diagnostic tests (imaging, lab work), and develop treatment plans. Perform in-office procedures such as breast biopsies, aspirations, and skin punch biopsies. Provide survivorship care and genetic screening referrals. Participation in community education initiatives as needed.
  • Plastic Surgery Support (Reconstructive & Cosmetic): Perform pre- and post-operative evaluations for patients undergoing plastic surgery, including breast reconstruction, lymphedema management, and abdominal surgeries. Manage surgical wounds, remove drains, and manage tissue expanders. Provide support for cosmetic procedures, which may include assisting with Botox, fillers, etc.
  • Administrative & Coordination: Coordinate care with a multidisciplinary team, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, and breast imaging. Document care in EPIC /iCare electronic medical record. Participate in tumor boards and quality improvement initiatives.
