About The Position

The Neurocritical Care Advanced Practitioner (APP) works in collaboration with neuro-intensivist physicians to manage complex neurological and critical care cases. The patient population in the Neuroscience ICU includes individuals with ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, traumatic brain injuries, subarachnoid hemorrhages, spinal cord injuries, respiratory failure, sepsis, shock, and postoperative conditions. All team members at TGH are expected to perform their duties in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of Tampa General Hospital.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (NP) program.
  • Active PA or APRN license in the state of Florida.
  • National certification as a PA-C or Acute Care NP
  • BLS and ACLS certification required.
  • Demonstrates current knowledge and level of expertise utilizing evidence and theory-based practice, infection control standards and clinical evaluations in providing care to clients in clinic or hospital-based settings, as evidenced by following established protocols.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and electronic medical records (EMR) systems, preferably Epic
  • Ability to multitask in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Outstanding customer service and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills for patient education and provider collaboration.
  • A commitment to advancing care through research and quality improvement.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience of working at least one (1) year in the neuro-critical care setting as a NP or PA or neuro ICU experience as a RN.
  • Strong clinical skills in patient assessment

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the etiologies, risk factors, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation of acute neurological medical emergencies, including acute stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, status epilepticus, intracranial hemorrhage, and spinal cord injury.
  • Applies critical thinking skills to synthesize and analyze patient data effectively.
  • Conducts thorough and accurate history and physical assessments for critically ill adult patients.
  • Participates in daily inpatient rounds with the neuro-intensivist physician, providing detailed patient data and treatment plans.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in key procedural skills, including central line placement, arterial line placement, and lumbar puncture (preferred).
  • Assesses patient response to treatment and adjusts the care plan as necessary.
  • Fosters ongoing communication with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Provides counseling and education to patients and families regarding medical procedures and treatment plans.
  • Ensures timely, accurate, and complete documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Actively participates in the education of trainees and healthcare professionals through teaching and mentorship, and attends required weekly conferences and academic meetings hosted by the Neurocritical Care team and the Division of Advanced Practice.
