About The Position

Emphasis on Diabetic Pump Patients and Continuous Glucose Monitors. This includes independent management of patient panels and treatment plans. Provide coverage for inpatient Diabetes Management Service (DMS) for absences, planned and unplanned, as well as scheduled weekends and holidays. Assist with DMS in providing inpatient care for patients with diabetes and hyperglycemia. Manage care of assigned inpatient caseload within the DMS service and monitor treatment plans. Responsible for covering outpatient clinics in MUSC outreach sites as needed.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN as noted below.
  • AGPNP/ANP (Adult Gerontology Primary Care NP or Adult NP): Adult pts (13 years to death), stable chronic disease state management or primary care setting.
  • FNP (Family NP): (birth to death) Stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan.
  • All certifications must be current and complete prior to start date: Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • DHEC license applications must be started prior to first day.
  • Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing and two years clinical experience required, at least one year of which must have been in a specialty area of care.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner specific to the area of employment required unless a new graduate.
  • New graduates must be certification eligible upon employment, and obtain certification within six months of employment.
  • Requires licensure as a Registered Nurse and hold official recognition as a Nurse Practitioner from the South Carolina Board of Nursing.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 1 year of endocrinology experience as a PA, AGPNP/ANP

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct care to patients through the following activities: Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations
  • Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline
  • Initiates referrals to other health care provides, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician
  • Documents and bills for direct care provided
  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice
  • Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research
  • Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization
  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education
  • Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members
  • APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law
  • Manage care of assigned inpatient caseload within the DMS service and monitor treatment plans.
  • Manage care of outpatients with diabetes, history of hyperglycemia, and related conditions.
  • Utilize appropriate clinical and laboratory data to appropriately manage patients.
  • Ensure that inpatient care documentation is within MUSC compliance and HIPAA directives.
  • Responsible for outpatient clinics in MUSC outreach sites. This includes independent management of patient panels and treatment plans.
  • Positively represent the division through active participation to various projects and initiatives.
  • Exhibit the highest standards of customer care and commitment according to MUSC Excellence.
  • Advocate our expertise to other services on campus and healthcare institutions by promoting the consulting and educational activities of the Diabetes Management Service.
  • Participate with patient care team toward mastering Joint Commission goals.
  • Work constructively with all other members of the endocrine division (physicians, nursing and administration): Communicate treatment plans; correctly perform administrative duties such as coding and documentation; appropriately seek clinical guidance when needed.
  • Potential precepting of MUSC NP or PA students during their clinical year.
