About The Position

Mental Health Cooperative, Inc. (MHC) was formed in 1993 to serve individuals with severe and persistent mental illness, expanding services to children and adolescents with severe emotional disorders across Middle and East Tennessee. Its sole purpose is to support and treat those challenged with serious mental illness and poverty. MHC is based out of Nashville and serves several communities across middle and East Tennessee with satellite offices. MHC was founded in response to the need for assertive community-based treatment for individuals requiring frequent inpatient psychiatric hospitalization. In 1999, MHC expanded services to include children and youth, merging three community organizations to create an innovative, comprehensive, and multidisciplinary approach. MHC remains the only organization in the state focused solely on this population. This position is for a psych Nurse Practitioner responsible for performing medical examinations, diagnosing common medical conditions, managing stable phases of chronic illness, coordinating health management, and assisting the clinic physician in delivering care to patients, all under physician direction.

Requirements

  • Valid Tennessee APN license with Psych & Mental Health Nurse Certification
  • Knowledge and understanding of the consumer group(s) served.

  • Obtains up to date thorough knowledge of psychiatry and psychopharmacology
  • High level of communication skills with consumers
  • Familiarization with APA Practice Guidelines (American Psychiatric Association), current journals and other published information.

  • Provides consumer focused services to consumers and their supports in a culturally sensitive manner, that is specific to the consumer’s age and condition.
  • Demonstrates emotional resilience and stability, adaptability, flexibility and tolerance of ambiguity and anxiety.
  • Uses effective listening, nonverbal, explanatory, interviewing and writing skills to elicit and provide information.
  • Displays sensitivity and responsiveness to consumers’ culture, age, gender, and disabilities.
  • Uses information technology, applies medical information and clinical data systems to provide evidenced-based care.
  • Assessments are complete and include accurate, thorough history-taking and required components of the mental status and/or physical exam.
  • Applies evidence-based medicine to clinical decisions and demonstrates awareness of quality improvement measures and application to clinical practice.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the contexts and systems in which services are provided and able to apply this knowledge to improve care.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform agency identified de-escalation and safety skills through agency-identified training and skills performance.

Responsibilities

  • Under physician direction, provides primary care services to clinic patients including prescribing, dispensing or transmitting medications in accordance with standardized procedures and current state regulations.
  • Provides general counseling, guidance and health instructions to individual patients and family members.
  • Participates in the multidisciplinary treatment team meetings as required.
  • Assists in organizing and implementing appropriate quality assurance activities.
  • Seeks supervision from supervising MD as appropriate.
  • Functions as part of a team in the provision of patient-care and performance of daily activities.
  • Performs physical examinations utilizing designated employer examination guidelines.
  • Participate in teaching activities as appropriate.
  • Completes clinical documentation in a timely manner that is consistent with agency standards.
  • Responsible for attending all mandatory in-services, continuing education and annual health requirements.
  • Comply with all Corporate Compliance policies, practices and procedures.
  • Report all unethical activities to supervisor, Corporate Compliance Office, Values Hotline number or Human Resource Director.
  • Comply with all OSHA and safety policies, practices, and procedures. Report all unsafe practices or accidents to supervisor, Safety Supervisor and/or OSHA Coordinator.
  • Will be compliant with the relevant regulations concerning the privacy and security of consumer’s protected health information (PHI) as established by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill.
  • Follow all policies and procedures set by the Agency.
