The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) position serves as administrative support within the Radiology Service of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The AMSA is responsible for scheduling appointments, interpreting and verifying provider orders, and ensuring compliance with VHA national scheduling guidelines. This role is foundational in providing specialized administrative patient support in a clinical setting.

  • Schedule, cancel, and reschedule patient appointments and/or consults.
  • Format and send appointment letters in the mail.
  • Enter no-show information and monitor the electronic wait list.
  • Prepare for clinic sessions and manage imaging CDs/digital images.
  • Ensure encounter forms are completed for workload credit.
  • Verify and update patient demographics and insurance information.
  • Process emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals.
  • Perform basic eligibility checks, co-pays, and pre-authorization requirements.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Six months of experience in clerical, office, customer service, or administrative work.
  • One year of education above high school or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record systems.
