About The Position

We have an opening for a Group Leader of the Advanced Development Group with administrative responsibility for a highly interdisciplinary team of engineers specializing in the design, development, integration, and management of advanced diagnostic systems, software tools, and critical infrastructure for national security applications. The team’s work is primarily in support of the Strategic Deterrence (SD) directorate, and spans from hands-on experimental support to strategic planning for lab-wide infrastructure and diagnostic capabilities, with a strong focus on innovation, reliability, and cross-functional collaboration. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED), within the Engineering Directorate. As a line supervisor, your responsibilities will complement your assigned programmatic activities. Depending on your assignment, this position may offer a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You may have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week. This position will be filled at either level based on your knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

Requirements

  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, physical sciences, or a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Advanced knowledge and significant experience in one or more of the following areas: RF and optical instrumentation and system design, scientific computing for data analysis, timing and firing system design and operation, and execution of experiments in field environments, with the ability to apply standard and novel approaches to broadly defined, complex technical assignments.
  • Advanced supervisory, organizational, and interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to successfully lead work in a multidisciplinary technical or scientific team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently plan, prioritize, execute, and manage multiple complex technical tasks and projects simultaneously, exercising judgment in adapting and modifying methods and techniques, developing and implementing solutions to complex technical challenges, responding to changing priorities, ensuring timely and accurate completion of reviews and assessments, and keeping management informed.
  • Advanced level written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively document work, present, and explain technical information to diverse audiences, advise senior management, interpret and convey Laboratory policies to employees, and interact productively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Expert-level knowledge and extensive experience in one or more of the following areas: RF and optical instrumentation and system design, scientific computing for data analysis, timing and firing system design and operation, and execution of experiments in field environments, with a national or international reputation for technical excellence and innovation.
  • Extensive experience leading and developing personnel for technical projects with demonstrated ability to lead and set technical direction for highly complex and broadly defined projects or programs and to develop and optimize strategies to improve technical methodology and operations, including responsibility for resource allocation, strategic planning, and risk mitigation.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills and demonstrated ability to effectively influence and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders, represent the group to senior management and sponsors, and communicate and explain highly complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Extensive track record of successfully mentoring, coaching, and developing staff, leading teams through challenging or sensitive conversations and performance management situations, and demonstrated ability to provide constructive feedback to team members and foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical, strategic, and administrative leadership for the multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers in the Advanced Development Group.
  • Collaborate with programmatic and NSED management to identify workforce needs; lead, carry out, and/or coordinate recruiting, hiring, training, workload management, and performance and salary management activities.
  • Maintain awareness and monitor performance of the technical progress across all projects supported by group members to ensure required programmatic milestones and deliverables are met, monitoring the effectiveness of technical approaches and resource utilization within the group, developing and implementing solutions to complex technical challenges, and proactively engaging to facilitate course corrections, connect staff to expertise, or remove barriers to success.
  • Support the career development and professional growth of group members by identifying training opportunities, facilitating mentorship, and providing regular feedback.
  • Communicate organizational priorities, changes, and opportunities to group staff, and represent the group’s interests to senior management.
  • Ensure that group members adhere to Laboratory policies and meet institutional and organizational safety, security, and ethics requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert at meetings, briefings, design reviews, and committee activities both internal and external to the Laboratory, providing strategic technical advice to both internal management and external customers
  • Provide strategic leadership and vision for the group, aligning workforce development with long-term and emerging programmatic needs.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor and resource for the group, offering high-level perspective, technical insight, and problem-solving support to help resolve highly complex or ambiguous challenges.
  • Mentor and coach other line managers or emerging leaders, fostering a culture of leadership development and knowledge transfer.
  • Lead or contribute to directorate-level initiatives, committees, or working groups focused on organizational improvement, culture, or strategic planning.
  • Represent the group and division to senior Laboratory management, external partners, and sponsors, advocating for resources and recognition as appropriate.
