About The Position

This position is for an Adult Inpatient Psychiatrist at Brook Lane Hospital in Hagerstown, MD, which is part of the Meritus Health and Brook Lane behavioral health network. The role involves managing a caseload of approximately 15 patients on a 27-bed Adult Inpatient Unit, with an average census of about 21. The average length of stay for voluntary patients is around 6 days, and for involuntary patients, it's about 8 days. The unit handles common diagnoses such as suicidality, acute psychosis, mania, depression with suicidal ideation, schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, and substance-induced psychiatric conditions, with about 55% of admissions involving co-occurring substance use disorder. The psychiatrist will work within a comprehensive multidisciplinary behavioral health team, managing complex cases with rapid psychiatric and medical evaluation and evidence-based treatment protocols. There are also teaching opportunities with psychiatry residents, medical students, NP, and PA programs, especially with the launch of the Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2025. The work environment emphasizes safety with CPI-trained staff, non-violent de-escalation protocols, duress panic buttons, and security rounding on all inpatient units.

Responsibilities

Manage a manageable caseload (~15 patients)
Provide rapid psychiatric and medical evaluation and evidence-based treatment protocols for complex cases (treatment-resistant depression, severe mania, psychosis, dual diagnosis, and medical comorbidities)
Participate in teaching opportunities with psychiatry residents, medical students, NP and PA programs
Provide daytime on-call coverage for ED referral screenings and urgent inpatient needs
