About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! There was an update to the Salary Range Effective February 1,2026. The new salary range is $31,200 - $51,249. This is a REPOST due to an administrative update. Current Applicants DO NOT need to reapply. This position is located in the Mailroom within Granville Correctional Institution in Butner, Granville County, NC. This position will function in the centralized mail processing center of a male close security custody facility.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of administrative experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Documented working knowledge of word processing or spreadsheet programs.
  • Documented knowledge of accounting procedures, mathematics, and their application in the work environment.
  • Documented knowledge of applying laws and departmental rules and regulations covering programs and services.

Responsibilities

  • Sorting and inspecting all offender mail.
  • Processing and handling all legal mail; utilize offender banking system to enter funds received for offenders; process and handle all incoming packages and all outgoing mail and packages.
  • Distributing needs for both the facility and offenders ensuring all policy and procedures are applied for the safely and security of the public and staff.
  • Completing office procedures and practices, as well as office programs, organizational structure and services to initiate, monitor, review, and maintain a variety of documents to determine or obtain compliance and acceptability of actions.
  • Functioning independently and using good communication skills both verbally and written and will answer offender inquiries concerning mail.
  • Lifting, pulling, pushing in excess of 10 pounds to move large bins of mail and/or packages.
  • Mail processing/handling and operating a computer.
