This is a part-time position in the County Courts to assist in the orderly and efficient operation of court business. The Bailiff is selected by a Circuit Court Judge to work in their courtroom.

Requirements

  • Requires good character and successful completion of background check, and excellent oral communication skills.
  • Must be available for work at times when court is in session, including occasional times when a jury is sequestered.
  • Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Work effectively with the general public, public officials, and other employees.
  • Effectively give direction and direct jurors, the public, witnesses, etc.
  • Take charge of situations and handle emergencies that may arise.
  • Carry out Judge's directives relating to juries.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the legal and efficient performance of the following: 1) opening and adjourning the courts, 2) maintaining order during court sessions, 3) security and care of juries; and 4) carrying out Judge's miscellaneous directives pertaining to efficient court operations.
  • Assists witnesses, litigants and the public by answering questions about court procedures, but does not attempt to give legal advice or discuss the relative merits of any case pending before the court. Maintains a neutral attitude toward all parties.
  • Observes whether minor children are in the courtroom and guards against the possibility of them hearing obscene testimony.
  • Assures that all parties and counsel are in the court and ready to proceed, and then informs the judge. Maintains order, and prevents unnecessary noise or disturbance in and about the courtroom.
  • Attends to witnesses who are sequestered by order of the court, summons them to the court as required and directed by the Judge. Excludes witnesses from the courtroom if directed by the court.
  • Reserves seating in the courtroom to accommodate the jury panel and keep the jurors together.
  • When the Court Clerk calls the jurors forward to take their seats in the jury box, the Bailiff shall be positioned at the gate separating the spectator areas from the trial area so that the Bailiff may be of assistance to the prospective jurors by directing them to the proper seats. Requests that jurors leave bulky items, books and magazines in a designated area while they are in the jury box.
  • Opens the gate for the juror to leave the fore-court and allows the new juror to enter, when a prospective juror is excused from the panel.
  • Directs jurors to the courtroom and jury room and instructs them not to enter or leave through the courtroom at any time during the duration of the trial.
  • Bailiffs are sworn to keep the jurors together until the next meeting of the court, to permit no person so speak or communicate with them, nor to do so themselves, on any subject connected with the trial. Returns to the courtroom before the next session begins.
  • After Bailiff is sworn to take charge of the jury, conducts the jury to the jury deliberation room and makes sure that necessary articles are furnished to them, such as pencils, paper, drinking water, etc., and sees that all facilities are in the operating order.
  • Bailiff may not leave the jury unguarded during their deliberations, and must be available in the event of an emergency.
  • Presents neat and pleasant appearance, and is informative, courteous and cooperative at all times. At the end of each day, makes sure their area of responsibility is secure before leaving.
  • In this public service position, employee is required to be courteous, cooperative and respectful at all times, with the public and clients. Also establishes and maintains a courteous, cooperative and respectful working relationship with other employees, supervisors and public officials.
