About The Position

Raritan Valley Community College's Workforce Training Center is seeking experienced professionals to teach non-credit courses in Emergency Medical Response (EMR). The EMR Instructor teaches foundational emergency care knowledge and hands-on skills to a diverse student population, including adult learners, career-changers, and dual-enrolled high school students. This role supports workforce development pathways in EMS, healthcare, and public safety by delivering engaging, competency-based instruction aligned with state and national EMR standards.

Requirements

  • Current certification as an Emergency Medical Responder, EMT, AEMT, Paramedic, or higher.
  • Approved instructor certification in EMR, First Aid, or CPR/AED (AHA, ARC, or equivalent), or the ability to obtain quickly.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of field experience in EMS, fire service, emergency response, or public safety.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with both adult learners and high school students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and adherence to EMR training standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior teaching or training experience in a community college or adult education setting.
  • Experience working with dual-enrollment or high school students.
  • Associate degree or higher in EMS, fire science, emergency management, healthcare, or related field.
  • Experience using LMS platforms and digital instructional tools.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Emergency Medical Response, First Aid, and CPR/AED courses using interactive, student-centered methods.
  • Provide clear demonstrations of patient assessment, emergency interventions, and proper use of medical equipment.
  • Facilitate realistic simulations and scenario-based training appropriate for both adult learners and high school students.
  • Support learners with varying levels of academic readiness and life experience, ensuring an inclusive and encouraging classroom environment.
  • Communicate course expectations, safety protocols, and performance standards clearly and consistently.
  • Prepare lesson plans, skills stations, lab materials, and simulation environments.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and respectful learning environment for students of differing ages and backgrounds.
  • Ensure all EMR equipment (manikins, AED trainers, supplies, etc.) is functional, sanitized, and set up properly for each class session.
  • Monitor student participation to ensure competency development in accordance with certification guidelines.
  • Assess student learning using written exams, skills evaluations, demonstrations, and scenario performance.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback and offer remediation opportunities when needed.
  • Accurately maintain attendance, grades, and certification documentation per college and regulatory guidelines.
  • Prepare students for EMR certification exams and help them understand academic and career pathways.
  • Collaborate with program coordinators, faculty, staff, and high school partners to support course alignment and student success.
  • Participate in department meetings, required trainings, and professional development to stay current with EMR protocols.
  • Uphold community college values of accessibility, equity, and support for diverse learners.
