Benedictine University is an inclusive academic community, inspired by the Catholic intellectual tradition and Benedictine values. We seek employees who will contribute to the advancement of our mission by helping students shape lives of meaning and purpose as engaged citizens who care for the Earth, welcome people of diverse faiths and cultures, and promote the common good. The Department of Languages and Literature in the Daniel L. Goodwin College of Business and Liberal Arts invites applications for an Adjunct Lecturer in Linguistics. The preferred candidate will have a terminal degree in linguistics, applied linguistics, or a closely associated field. TESOL experience with adults in an academic setting and willingness to travel to teach are essential. The position involves teaching in the MA in Linguistics program (TESOL Concentration), which is currently offered to yearly cohorts of experienced Vietnamese teachers entirely in English in both face-to-face and hybrid modes. No knowledge of Vietnamese is required, but willingness to engage with Vietnamese colleagues in English is part of the job. Supervision of graduate students' thesis research and evaluation of theses may be required, and the ability to teach basic qualitative and quantitative research methods is essential. The successful candidate must be prepared to travel to Vietnam to teach face-to-face for 2-4 weeks each year, typically in late summer but possibly at other times, and to complete the teaching of some courses online. Travel expenses (airfare, hotel, insurance, visa processing, per diem for meals and incidentals as well as transportation to and from airport) will be covered by Benedictine University. We currently anticipate that the successful candidate will be asked to teach two or three courses (8-12 contact hours) per year depending on enrollment and program need. Candidates need not reside in the Chicago metropolitan area. Applications from any citizen or permanent resident authorized to work in the U.S. regardless of domestic or international domicile will be accepted.
