About The Position

This is a temporary part-time teaching position. Teaching opportunities during the summer may be available depending on enrollment but not guaranteed. A part-time position in the Department of Communication Studies, Theatre, & Dance, composed of three areas Communication Studies-General, Communication-Interdisciplinary Studies, and Theater Arts Performance. The department is a viable entity in the Bethune Cookman University (BCU) founder’s quest for a liberal arts institution as well as the fulfillment of the mission and vision to educate learners via effective verbal and nonverbal communication to become globally focused communicators, performers, and scholars. Through inquiry, critical thinking, and collaboration, students are provided with the skills necessary for effective cultural and civic engagement. Therefore, the Adjunct Instructor is to be committed to an inclusive working environment, and expected to participate as an active member of the department's collaborative endeavors with a commitment to quality instruction in assigned theatre-arts courses.

Requirements

  • At least two (2) years of professional experience in teaching
  • Adjunct Instructors hold master's degree in Theatre Arts Performance, or related field from a nationally accredited university or college, commensurate professional experience, and have potential to become excellent teacher, student mentor in the academic community; and in fulfillment of the University’s established criteria
  • Adjunct Instructors are not eligible for tenure
  • The Adjunct Instructor engages their students beyond the classroom and must demonstrate an active commitment to the life of the University

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in teaching historically disadvantaged populations, show a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and be prepared to teach a variety of communication courses
  • A commitment to and effectiveness in classroom instruction are preferred
  • Teach day as well as evening classes, and ability to partake in other university-wide committee assignments are valuable

Responsibilities

  • teach courses in Theatre-Arts Performance like introduction to theatre, elements of play production, theatre crafts, and introduction to design
  • prepare course materials such as syllabi, presentations, and assignments in collaboration with other faculty members teaching the same courses
  • deliver student centered learning through the effective use of available learning management systems (Canvas)
  • administer and grade formative and summative assessments and provide feedback
  • maintain regularly scheduled office hours for students
  • support the college and departmental wide activities and services with a spirit of leadership, commitment, accountability, and collegiality
  • adhering to the institution's policies
