About The Position

GRCC's Applied Technology Department is seeking an adjunct instructor in Heating, Ventilation, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Technology (HVAC) to join the Applied Technology Department. Candidates must possess an interest in working with diverse student populations from a wide range of age, ethnicity, national origin and ability; and a willingness engage in and develop innovative teaching strategies to effectively assess student learning outcomes. We are interested in candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence by providing leadership in teaching and service toward building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment, and candidates that are committed to the support necessary to prepare individuals for a career in HVAC. Adjunct faculty members are responsible to GRCC and to each other for the successful completion of departmental work as well as work associated with the School of Business and Industry and GRCC as a whole. In an environment where innovation is valued, each adjunct faculty member will take responsibility to perform their work in a manner consistent with both the letter and the spirit of GRCC values.

Requirements

  • Associates degree required; Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Michigan Mechanical License required
  • EPA 608 Universal required
  • A minimum of five years' work experience in HVAC Service, Installation or Maintenance is required.
  • Ability to present and implement complex ideas and concepts from lecture to lab application.
  • Skills in active listening, social perceptiveness and critical thinking.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in instructional technology and learning management systems (Google Workspace tools: Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Drive, Canvas)
  • Must be able to provide teaching demonstrations through modeling and scaffolding techniques.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • An understanding of and appreciation for the community college philosophy and student population.
  • An interest in working with diverse student populations, who represent a wide range of age, ethnicity, national origin, and ability.
  • A willingness and an ability to learn college systems.
  • High energy level with enthusiasm and an interest in helping and supporting students and colleagues.
  • Use of good judgement in handling sensitive or difficult situations in a professional manner.

  • Ability to work under pressure while possessing mature judgement and flexibility in regards to interruptions and schedule changes.
  • Only adjunct faculty living in the state of Michigan can teach classes for GRCC.

Nice To Haves

  • NATE Certifications, current or previous preferred.
  • Any additional industry certificates or certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction in the area of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning/Refrigeration, which include skills in operating systems, parts, and units, diagnosis, troubleshooting, repair, and blueprint reading.
  • Teach and perform demonstrations as well as create and safely facilitate lab based training in the classroom.
  • Fulfill adjunct faculty responsibilities by providing a stimulating classroom environment, following syllabus requirements, using department approved curriculum and tools, and applying college attendance policies.
  • Respond to communications promptly and ensure students have access to course information.
  • Comply with GRCC Policies and the Faculty Agreement.
  • Maintain accurate student records to meet GRCC reporting requirements.
