About The Position

The Battery Manufacturing Engineering team is opening new highways with our next-generation propulsion systems. We're investing over $50 billion to build some of the most technologically advanced EV manufacturing facilities in the U.S. and E.U. to produce the next generation of Ford electric vehicles. State-of-the-art technologies and processes for battery cells, arrays, and packs are core to our competitive strategy and will provide endless opportunities to innovate and grow -- all while helping the environment. In this position... You'll lead the development of innovative adhesive solutions for our high voltage battery packs. In this role you will drive technological advancement in this discipline as part of a small, specialized team. You'll investigate candidate potting and dispense process strategies for new products to reduce the cost and improve performance and own the process from early prototype builds through full volume production and provide potting and dispense design for manufacturability (DFM) input to our product design team

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, Materials Engineering, Physics, or Manufacturing
  • 5+ years of manufacturing engineering or equivalent relevant experience
  • Experience developing and implementing dispense processes and equipment in high-volume production: (expansion potting, syntactic potting, impingement mixing, sealants, cure-in-place gaskets, form-in-place gaskets, structural adhesives)
  • Experience with low and high viscosity
  • Experience with one part and multiple components adhesives
  • Experience with high volume adhesive dispensing equipment
  • Proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T), and use of statistical analysis software (e.g. Minitab).

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, and Manufacturing
  • Demonstrated first-hand experience developing and implementing dispense processes and equipment in high-volume production: (expansion potting, syntactic potting, sealants, cure-in-place gaskets, form-in-place gaskets, structural adhesives)

Responsibilities

  • Investigate candidate potting and dispense process strategies for new high voltage battery products
  • Downselect dispense equipment technologies to meet quality and cycle time targets. Lead the technical evaluation and selection of equipment and material suppliers. Manage the supplier relationship from initial quotes through equipment commissioning and final acceptance.
  • Prove out new quality inspection and validation methods to ensure each dispense meets our requirements. You will ensure volume, bead, location, and ratios are all within specification.
  • Run Design of Experiments to optimize dispense paths and flow rates to get the most volume in the least amount of time, and use statistical process control methods to monitor and maintain process capability once in production.
  • Provide potting and dispense Design for Manufacturability (DFM) input and act as the central Manufacturing Engineering point of contact for all potting and dispensing activities with the Product Design team. Collaborate closely with Materials and Quality Engineering, and with Supplier Technical Assistance (STA) teams to resolve challenges and drive continuous improvement.
  • Validate and optimize processes from early prototype builds through full volume production, leading and executing process trials on the manufacturing floor, and directly troubleshooting to resolving dispensing issues during initial capability runs.
  • Drive proof-of-concept to green light new and novel materials, manufacturing methods, technologies, and suppliers
  • Evolve the potting and dispense knowledge base through standards and benchmarking

Benefits

  • Immediate medical, dental, vision and prescription drug coverage
  • Flexible family care days, paid parental leave, new parent ramp-up programs, subsidized back-up child care and more
