About The Position

Activity instructors are responsible for leading a safe, engaging and developmentally appropriate high-risk activity for campers, while actively contributing to the overall camp experience. This role emphasizes camper growth, building social skills, responsibility, leadership, and self-confidence, through both structured programs and everyday interactions. The instructor maintains the identified activity area and equipment to the highest safety standards, participates enthusiastically in all camp activities, and collaborates as part of a dynamic camp staff team to create a fun, memorable, and inclusive environment for all campers.

Requirements

  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED (AA Degree in Child Development or a related field preferred); prior experience working with groups of K-12 students in an academic or recreational setting preferred.
  • Must be First Aid/CPR certified. (Training provided by Woodcraft Rangers)
  • TB Clearance
  • Successful completion of livescan/background check with DOJ, FBI
  • Training and experience teaching archery, axe throwing, low ropes or rock climbing to children. (Woodcraft Rangers will provide training & certification)
  • Must submit health history records prior to first day of work.
  • Possess attributes that contribute to camper success (enthusiasm, integrity, compassion, trustworthiness, patience and respect)
  • Experience working with youth in a camp environment preferred, a minimum of one year working with youth in any setting.
  • Ability to perform traditional summer camp activities (hike, chants, stand for extended periods of time, etc.)
  • Possess the cognitive, auditory, and visual abilities to perform described duties at camp
  • Must be able to stay at camp in Big Bear Valley, CA during camp sessions
  • Safe and engaging activity instruction for all ages

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver an archery, axe throwing, low ropes or rock climbing program that is developmentally appropriate for campers
  • Focus on camper development (social skills, communal living skills, responsibility, self-esteem, leadership development, etc... )
  • Ensure that all camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures
  • Maintain a clean, safe and secure activity area at all times, including while not in use
  • Maintain activity equipment
  • Conduct daily safety checks of equipment
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned
  • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise special events, evening programs and other all-camp activities.
