About The Position

ED 346 includes an Academic Civic Engagement (ACE) component, which will involve all students doing 10 hours of volunteer service with immigrants and/or refugees. In order to support the ACE experience, there is funding available from the Svoboda Center for Civic Engagement to hire one ACE Course Assistant who will be available in class to assist the professor and support students. Requirements

  • Student in academic good standing.
  • Must have completed a 200-level Education course.
  • Students should have experience working in professional businesses and organizations, preferably nonprofit settings.
  • Student should have a strong sense of service and strongly committed to refugee/immigrant education
  • Detail-oriented, speedy, technical skills with Google Docs, Spreadsheets, Forms
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including quick & appropriate response to emails and tactful communication with host teachers
  • Ability to proactively anticipate issues and trouble-shoot with students and instructor

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate Sites: As directed, working with Alyssa Melby, Svoboda Center Director, and course instructor Prof. Noelle Roubinek, contact host teachers in early February to 1) confirm that they still are interested in having students volunteer in their classrooms and how many, what times and days, what kind of population and tasks. 2) Update list of options accordingly. 3) Confirm name, email, and physical address of host teachers. 3) Manage Google sheet with sign-up options, 4) Manage Google sheet with log of hours and description of tasks
  • Coordinate Student transportation to/from placements, including 1) Send out google doc to find drivers, including days, times, sites, 2) Reserve vans as needed using ACE budget code
  • Answer any questions about the ACE hours log/ issues during placement, including 1) choosing placements that are the best fit- in and out of class, 2) Communicate with students to ensure they sign up by the due date. Students MUST stay with the same placement, and MUST attend at the time and day they sign up for every week. No changing hours, days, times, etc. without instructor approval; 3) how to log their hours, 4) talking through issues that might arise during ACE placement and offering guidance
  • Create a Google doc in which you log your hours for ACE Course Assistant work, & share with Noelle Roubinek and Alyssa Melby. Keep updated as work is conducted.
