This position is responsible for process optimization and close execution for the US and Bermuda insurance operational close within Close Control and Reporting (CCR). The individual will champion a process improvement mentality while maximizing the use of resources and technology. CCR is responsible for the controls and processes around reporting Markel’s underwriting division and segment results

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 4+ years of accounting experience
  • Strong computer skills including a high degree of proficiency within Excel.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills.
  • High degree of flexibility and responsiveness to change in a fast-paced environment.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills in order to present ideas and findings to management and senior leadership in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines
  • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license preferred

Responsibilities

  • Oversee assigned monthly, quarterly, and annual general ledger closing and reporting processes.
  • Collaborate with teammates and initiate ideas with management to identify, design, and implement process improvements for greater efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Understand workflow and process bottlenecks and work creatively and independently to generate ideas and implement change to streamlining the close process.
  • Work closely with other functional areas (i.e., program accounting, reinsurance, actuarial, IT, claims) and business management to resolve issues and support achievement of business goals.
  • Assume primary responsibility for monthly underwriting system close and processes and serve as accounting to IT liaison for responsible IT systems.
  • Understand nature of insurance IT systems and impact on the accounting process.
  • Collaborate with various teams on implementation and testing of insurance system changes and enhancements.
  • Review journal entries and complex account reconciliations including identification and remediation of all issues in compliance with audit requirements.
  • Provide guidance, instruction, mentoring, and leadership to team for purpose of achieving functional goals and objectives.
  • Use technology to best leverage available resources and complete tasks in the most efficient and effective manner.
  • Assist with the compilation and/or review of insurance company financial statements and ensure compliance with statutory guidance and regulatory deadlines.
  • Organize team projects, schedules, and resources working with management.
  • Participate in other strategic accounting and business projects as they arise.
